My shop smells like a medicine cabinet

Turned a Eucalyptus burl throw-top three days ago, and the shop still smells of the stuff...very aromatic, in a good way.

Ed,

Very nice work, what is the black tip made of?

Thanks...the tip is made from hard Delrin plastic.

Here's an inside view of the hollowed out top. Hollowing the top reduces weight, improves performance and provides a place for cord storage. The logo shield at the base of the hollow is protected from wear by an adhesive backed "epoxy dome".

Very nice! Using the "lid" on the end of the string is clever. I've made a number of throwing tops but never heard of hollowing for weight and balance - I want to try that! Do you have guidelines on how deep to hollow?

I turn the tips from white nylon but the black delrin looks better!

Thanks John...

This top measures about 3" wide and 4" tall, including the tip. The hollow is about 2" deep and the wall thickness is around 3/8" at its thinnest point. The goal is to remove the natural top-heaviness from this type design, and to keep the total weight to no more than 150 grams.

A lot of top players use a technique where the top is thrown out and then back to their hand, where they do hand-spinning tricks...so weight is important. This guy is using a bearing tip, but shows the process pretty well:

Ok, that was good! Thanks for the info. I had someone admiring one of my tops the other day - maybe I'll try some hollowing.

Ed, that link was fantastic, that ..........

....guy is amazing! The few times I have attempted to throw such tops they have crashed against a wall some place across the room! >(
