Silicone Tool Protector

I bought some D-way beading tools (great product) and I’m looking to make some silicone protectors for them using silicone sealer and cornstarch. I adapted this idea from an AAW article on vacuum chuck seals.

I have a couple of questions regarding this though. One, do you think the form fitting silicone would allow moisture to be trapped close to the tool, causing rust? And if this is true, would a coat of WD-40 cause the silicone to degrade?

Has anyone tried this? If it works, I might do a number of them so when I transport my tools, they are protected.

Much easier to protect tool edges.......

... by using short sections of plastic or rubber hoses over the cutting tips. This is my application when traveling with turning tools, because we often have a variety of hose sizes around the shop/house, and the price is right.

I take my turning tools with me every Tuesday to the Vet's Garage to turn and like Jamie I find that short pieces of hose work well to protect my tool tips.

I made.some.tool.tip protectors out of plasti-dip. Dont think i ever had a rust problem. What your planning to do should work well. Ive played with that silicone and corn starch mixture a lot a few years ago. Kinda messy but very intrresting.

If you have tools mounted changeable handles you can just flip the sharp end into the handle.

All my tools art carried like this.

Sorry. It will not work with skews and roughing gouges.

Silicone contamination of wood makes finishing extremely difficult due to "fish eyes." You might want to make sure this silicone sealer cannot cause fish eyes on turned pieces.

I used the silicone concoction on my cupcake icing and never had a problem with fish eyes or other maladies in my finish. I've also used clear silicone caulking to install the glass in my hand mirrors for the last 20 or more years. No problems there either.

I had the hose. What I did was cut a ~5" length and then heated one end with a heat gun. Once it was pliable, I "smashed" the end together to form a closed end. Works great.

That's exactly how I make heavy protectors for my Hunter tools (except shorter). It takes some fairly big diameter tubing for the big Hercules.
