Wow, imagine him with a metal lathe and mill.

His use of the drill reminds me of the guy I found in a tiny shop in Venice. We had no common language, but when I gave him some little wooden finger tops he wanted to show me his lathe. He went in the back room and brought out a Dewalt electric drill which he clamped to the workbench to turn wood.

Skin missing and blood, just the way Roy does it! I also hate cutting metal on a table saw. It feels like can't wear enough eye protection, and the chips go everywhere! I leave the eye protection on when I remove my shirt. It's a mess!

Dick nailed it. I got squeamish BEFORE I saw all slivers and filings. My eyes are hurting. I froze the video and looked it up, you can buy those things for less than $8.50. I like to be creative and make fittings, but I would not risk my hide and my tools and my eyes and my time to save that kind of money.

I showed a friend how to cut an aluminum rail for a stair lift with his chop saw. That aluminum saw dust is EVERYWHERE and will NEVER go away.

I used to work in a factory that made these things for sale and that's exactly how we made them. What he didn't show is the first step in the process -- making brass rods out of brass ingots.

All kidding aside, there appears to be genre of YouTube videos which demonstrate how to make tools for your shop. There are videos showing how to make table saws, planers, jointers, all sorts of sanders, all sorts of clamps, etc. The point doesn't appear to be saving money. Why would you spend a few hours to make a set of C-clamps when, by the time you buy the all-thread, nuts, hardwood, and glue, to make the clamps, you've spent more than it would take to buy the clamps ready made? Answer: Because you can.
