I live in Peoria, IL. The one in front is hackberry. The one in back is a bit of a mystery. I thought it was crab apple when I first cut it, but it's not dense enough and big growth rings. Feels more like a soft maple, but I've never seen that kind of color in the heartwood. It's redder in the middle than what shows in the big picture. This may not be the one you are asking about in the photo, but it's from the same tree. Both of these are examples of the joy I get from turning. I plan on the coloring position a little, but when I got close to the final form, I see these little spikes of color in both pieces. Just like treasure hunting!
