I've been looking for some for a year now. I don't care if they are kiln dried. I can even use them 10" wide.

I'd like to make more like this:

The last time I found some was at Jeffries Woodworks outside Knoxville. However what I found was for my mirrors and only about 6" wide. Don't remember if they had wider and their stock constantly changes because there are a lot of woodworkers around there. It's worth a call. They don't have a website. Write a

I plan on going back to Jefferes soon, I'll check. Every time I go I ask about figured maple and I dig through the stock. I've found plenty they considered figured but nothing close to what I was looking for. But they have a huge stock - I always find plenty of other wood! BTW, they will cut a longer board as long as it leaves at least 2' to sell to someone else. They do have a Facebook page, email: cynjeffries@gmail.com

(I kind of hate going to Jeffries since I'm always broke afterwards. On the other hand, it makes me realize at their prices I have a small fortune of wood in my own shop!)

When searching I asked David Marks and he and some of his friends had suggestions which I saved. I've checked with these several times but so far none of them had what I was looking for. Stock constantly changes, of course, so maybe check there. It's time to check again myself.

Another thing I thought of pursuing was the people who supply blanks for instrument makers. I wonder if they might have wood that was not suitable for violins but would work for a platter blank. I'm also looking for something 2" thick or a little less.

Dunlap Woodcrafts in Chantilly, VA often has lots of figured maple for their gunstock clients and also has wider material. They might be worth a try:

My thoughts exactly! My list of possible suppliers has just grown significantly! I feel some figured maple coming on!

I loved the look of the little squarish platter I showed. (wood provided by one of our favorite WC people!) I carried it plus one from walnut burl to Italy and gave them to a family that invited us and were our private tour guides of the northern part of the country. They were so excited friends started dropping by to see the it and some other things I brought! I would love to multiply that experience.

Air dried is better if you can find it. Difference between KD and Air dried wood, rip a board of KD on your table saw and you get saw dust. Rip a board of air dried and you get shavings. Most of the best stuff goes to instrument makers and for veneers. I was in Gilmer Wood in Portland, my first time there, and was looking at some highly figured woods. The sales man said, "you don't want to go in there, that is instrument grade wood."
