I friend dropped by and left me some very old dry Box Elder. Was a bear to cut clean without tearout. Took all of my skills and I still had a little bit to sand out. I bleached it after sanding. Finished it with Krylon Fixatif which is the best finish I've found for not changing the color. I wanted the light wood to be really light. It's brighter in person than in the photo. I then sprayed it with Krylon Matte UV inhibitor. I didn't want the Matte but that's all I can get locally. Turned a sphere and ornament off the corners of the bowl blank.
Bleaching wont stop the red from fading. Keeping it out if UV light is all that helps. UV inhibitor i you finish helps a tiny bit but if you put this piece in direct sun the red will fade to brown in just a few days. Binh Pho used to.spray over.the red with the same.color.using metalic dyes which dont fade. I used a 2 part wood bleach.
