I was cleaning up the bottom of a vessel and when I pulled the Hunter mini Hercules away I hit the chuck. Said a few nasty works and figured the cutter was shot. Not so. It still had good edges. There is a chunk take out of my chuck however. I thought the carbide cutters were more brittle than that. Apparently not.
Wow. Mine have chipped with the slightest touch on another tool.
I quickly realized I can't tell if they are chipped without good magnifications. I use either a 30x microscope or a 30x lighted hand loupe I keep in the Hunter tool drawer. I looked at one of the large cutters with the magnifier today and saw three tiny chips.
John obviously caught the tool where the force was straight into the edge. You may have impacted something perpendicular to that, which would not be backed up or supported by the progressively widening angle. But I could be wrong.

That would make a good experiment. I have some cutters that have chips but enough good edge to try cutting steel in a controlled way. I turned down steel chuck jaws on the wood lathe with Thompson steel so this might be a good comparison.
