A few questions re: a Powermatic 3520B.........

A neighbor has a Powermatic 3520B that is 9 years old. This lathe has only been turned on several times. His health will not allow him to turn any longer, and the lathe will be sold. What was the selling price of a 3520B 9 years ago? What if any improvements have been made to the 3520B lathes in the last 9 years? Are there any possible problems that could come about because of the lathe sitting for most of the last 9 years? (the turning that was done was close to 9 years ago) Best bet is to give it a thorough workout before committing I figure.

I can't help you with the earlier price, but I've read recently of used 3520b lathes going for around $3000 depending on the condition. Does it run without bearing noises? Any play in the spindle? Any rust on the bed? Is everything important with it (faceplate, live center, drive center, knockout bar)? Does the tailstock quill extend smoothly. If it has had low usage nothing should be worn out and it should work fine as long as it runs.

I bought mine used and in good shape and I really like it. The only thing I had to do was remove the quill and clean and lube the threads.

The environment that the lathe has been stored in for the past 9 years would be a factor

to consider. The part of the country this resides in will also be a factor. If the machine was

stored in a nice dry environment you should not have any problems, if it was in a high humidity

environment for 9 years you could have issues with electrical connections and corrosion on various parts.

A coastal region can also introduce salt into the equation.

I purchased my PM3520B used for $2700 and it was only 1 1/2yrs old. It had a couple of minor problems which helped me negotiate the price. If the lathe you are trying to purchase is 9 yrs old you should have some room to negotiate the price. If it has been sitting for awhile it may have some surface rust which is not a big deal to clean but a reason to negotiate the price. But definitely give it a test run.

9 gears ago the lathe probably cost around $3000 new.
