I just found out that Lissa Oland passed away last November.
I had the pleasure of visiting Lissi several times in Brasstown before she moved back to Denmark. She was always kind and generous (with her time and her wood!), had a good sense of humor, and really knew her woodturning. Huge stuff!
I still have an unopened box with a set of the Oland tools that Knud designed for big things. Maybe they belong in a museum now.

Yes, I remember when you and I went to visit her. Incredible shop. The gallery had some of the biggest bowls I've seen anywhere.

Knud Oland was my first teacher at the .....

..Folk School in 1986, and the classes were taught at their studio up river from the school. Lissi wasn't doing any turning then, but she was the drill master when it came to sanding, and we did learn to sand well or not get lunch! She was a tough little gal, not physically limited by the size of the chunks of wood she wrestled up on the lathes, and not well acquainted with a bowl gouge. She used the scrapers that Knud always used, and I still have several of them in my tool collection.
