Source for Vonax polishing compound?

John K Jordan

A google search listed plenty of suppliers in the UK. Anyone know where to get it in the US?

A friend just called and saw your not but could not respond to Woodcentral. He said to tell you Mark Sallee (sp) in Atlanta sells it. I may have his number somewhere. I'll look tomorrow if you don't find it before then.

Mark Silay in Atlanta has a box that he brought to the Tri-State Meeting a couple of months ago.

Thanks

Sillay was one of the three people I've heard recommend Vonax. Sillay said he used it to polish the Parfix 3408 CA glue finish he uses and demos. Frank Penta might have been another one who mentioned the Vonax.

I also asked this on another forum and a very generous gentleman named Mike Ash cut off a big chunk of the bar he had and mailed it to me! Now I can experiment with it and see if I want to buy some more. If it works well perhaps some other club members would want enough to make a larger order.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to evaluate the grit size and compare it to others, such as the white diamond, the green bar I often use for metal, and the yellow stuff used to hone carving knives. For some reason, the makers of polishing compounds don't seem free with this info or even the type of abrasive.

I though about crushing a speck, making a slurry in water or oil or glycerin, and comparing in under the microscope along with other compounds.

Could someone try it on acrylic pen and see if it works better than the usual polishing compounds? Thanks

philip,

Sorry, I can't, since I have never turned an acrylic pen. It is supposed to be formulated for plastic, though. The next time I turn an acrylic ornament or something I'll try it.

I did try it today on bare Cocobolo sanded to 1000. Put a very nice finish on it.
