Jet or Laguna

Ok definitely a novice. Recommendations on whether to buy a Jet 18-40 or a Laguna revo 20-36. Both 220 volt, both new (surplus-scratch/dent). $100 difference in price. Thoughts/experience.

Thanks.

Jet

Tough to beat Jet for parts and support. Can't see Laguna having the same parts availability as Jet, especially years down the road. It looks like the live center is a throw away on the Jet, the Laguna is a Chinese knockoff of Oneway, but looks better than the Jet.

yup Jet

I've done business with Surplus Tools many times and you can't go wrong with them... I didn't know until recently they also carried Laguna

(Surplus Tools & Equipment is a Seattle area company, that sells returned/refurbished/rebuilt tools with full warranty, but they do not ship, you have to pickup)

I have turned on both, and generally.....

...prefer the features on the Laguna. It is a more substantially built lathe than the newer Jet model, and most well built lathes used by part time turners are problem free for many years of service.

Not quite....

I live in Spokane and had contacted Surplus Tools on four occasions as their prices on the lathes they offer are really good. However each time they told me that there is no factory warranty on any of their Jet or Powermatic equipment (not sure about Laguna as I never asked). They said the only warranty is their in house 90 day guarantee but it would have to be brought back to them. Not easy to do with a heavy lathe from the other side of the state. They do have new or near new equipment at pretty decent savings and if the factory warranty was still in tact I would not have hesitated to drive across the state to pick up a dent and scratch lathe. I believe the Jet1840 would have been a savings of $1000!

This is a quote from a recent email that I received from them

"The surplus inventory no longer carries any factory warranties. However, we do warranty our surplus tools for 90 days. If anything is not working correctly, we will take care of our customers and ensure that the issue is resolved and or customer is satisfied."
