Pen Disassembly

Doug Reynolds

I made a pen turning the acrylic with the wrong busing set so the acrylic is too thick for the pen kit. Is there a way to disassemble the pen without damaging the mechanism so I can return the acrylic to the proper thickness? I tried with my bare hands but arthritis has rendered my grip weak.

Some pen turning supply places sell a "Pen Disassembly Punch Set" that looks suspiciously like a "Transfer Punch Set" from harbor freight. Drill a hole in a block of wood that the nib will fit thru but the barrel won't, find the right punch and tap out the nib, reverse, find the punch that fits the transmission and tap it out.

Ps when reassembling, you might want to add a small spot of glue to the press fit parts, key word is "small", maybe even tiny, I would think of using epoxy, much less stressful then CA.

I cannot get any part of the pen apart to be able to use a punch. Its really tight. Can I use say a strap wrench?

The very tip unscrews to change the ink cartridge. Its one of those bold action pen kits.

Doug, check out the Q & A for the bullet bolt action at Penn State, toward the end, someone discusses disassembly.

Looks like you still might need a transfer punch set.

Thanks for the assistance. Seems I need to buy a few tools to disassemble one pen kit .. Cheaper to just start all over again with a new kit. Oh well. Next time I need to be more vigilant on which bushing set I install on the lathe.

The transfer punch set is identical to the HF set. I bought mine for pen disassembly but have used it for so much more. Very handy to have in the shop for $11.00
