That's what happens when you don't clean up the shavings; eventually they build up so high that you cannot stand at the lathe anymore.

I might be able to turn in the seated position, but the background noise (planer? horn?) would drive me bonkers.

Although if I turned either seated, squatted or kneeling for more than about 2 minutes I wouldn't be able to stand up. I'd have to use a Mechanics creeper just to get away from the lathe.
