My reason for posting is because I want all turners to be safe, yet we know the occasional accident does occur. I have been hit hard a couple of times myself, but not injured due to safety equipment I was wearing at the time. My best wishes and prayers are for this gentleman's full recovery.

Please use best safety practices, and stay out of the line of fire whenever you can!

Hope he heals quickly from his injuries!

Large billets turned at high speeds is an accident waiting to happen.

You never know if you have a wood billet with a separation in the grain.

Looks like the surgeon does upholstery part time, that's a lot of staples! Likely going to have a little PTSD when stepping back to the lathe, hope the physical and mental recovery goes well! I've had a fairly bad accident to my finger, I broke out in a sweat when starting back at it.

This brings around again the issue of personal protective equipment. His UVEX shield is a good face shield. It is meant to protect the face from small flying chips and things, not from chunks. There is no face shield on the market that will protect the turner from pieces like this man experienced. That's what the cage on the lathe is for. Lynne Yamaguchi has gone to a police riot helmet that is designed to provide impact protection (American Woodturner, June 2014). This is in addition to the cage. Please don't feel safe behind a plastic face shield. Put the cage back on your lathe and stay out of the line of fire.

Maybe I read it, but the statement was made that if you comfortable with being hit in the face sheild with a ball peen hammer, then it is fairly rated for woodturning.

Been there, done that:

My Trend shield took a one inch dent over my skull, leaving a hole through

the frontal sinus and exposing brain. So it may have saved my life, but did

not prevent injury though it's more than just a face shield.

Same modus: forgot I'd left lathe on high speed. 15" platter flew apart into

four pieces.....

Many if not mostt of the cases of things flying apart and causing serious damage are due to the lathe running at too high a speed apart from the "it was only held together with a bark inclusion" problem. I believe the force increases as the square of the velocity.

Keep the speed down especially with large diameter objects.

First question I ask is was he standing in the line of fire... We do not have full impact type helmets which given the damage he sustained, would have made it a concussion case. I even turn off my lathe if I have to cross the line of fire now...
