Like you, I cannot mount my filtration units to the ceiling. I have mounted them vertically, as high as possible on the walls of my shop rooms.

I agree. Dust tends to fall so it seems to me like it might actually be better down low. Probably the most importat thing is to find a location that circulates the air so it gets more of the dust and hopefully before it gets back to you

I resisted the idea of a ceiling mounted unit previously because someone mentioned it would pull the dust past your face. I need the mobility or rather want to use it closer to the source of the dust.

John, no issues at all... these are basically just a fan in a filter housing.

I think the fan in these units is a squirrel cage blower. Some of them are made so the fan can be in any position, but some can not (should Not) be mounted with the shaft vertical. They lack thrust bearings to support the end of the shaft. Might want to check with Jet.

I made a downdraft table to sand on. Its a cart with a slotted top and a tray under it. The hose for my DC fits into a hole in the tray. Works, at least better than nothing.

The dust that these filters target are very very fine particles... they typically don't fall to the floor for quite some time... they tend to stay in the air for a long time.

If they fell to the floor, we wouldn't need an air filter... a broom would suffice.

How about mounting horizontally (i.e. Filter and intake at right angles to the floor) on the wall. No thrust issues that way.

I am just speculating on the bearings and if the manufacturer indicates the shaft must be horizontal.

I think mounted on the wall would be fine if the shaft is horizontal or if the unit is designed to mount in any position. Its a good idea to set it so it circulates the air around and around.

The Jet manual that came with mine indicates two orientations for mounting:

- Horizontally, as with the largest surface parallel to the floor

- Vertically, as with the largest surface parallel to the wall with intake and output horizontal along the wall.

Either way, they have specific positioning instructions for efficiency.

I'm with Alan. The very fine dust that easily circulates in the air isn't heavy enough to fall quickly to the floor, and is easily kept airborne from our movement, HVAC, and such. My expectation is the goal is for the air filter to catch this fine dust before our lungs do.

I had limitations on where and how I could mount my Jet dust collector and called Jet support. The gentleman I spoke with was very helpful and I'm happy I followed his recommendations for my use. Just a thought.

I will open the box, read the manual, and call Jet customer service. The vendor owes their thanks as well.
