I have a few minutes to kill this afternoon while waiting for some paint to dry on another project so I pulled 3 pieces of 2x4 out and turned them. In the photo the top one is the Skew. The next one down is the Hunter Osprey used as a bevel rubbing tool. The bottom was done with An EZ wood flat scraper and EZ wood detailer.


You will see in these photos that I couldn't achieve the same crispness in the joining areas between details with either the Osprey or the EZ wood tools. They just don't have the narrow geometry of the skew. You will also see that fine pointed details just fail with a scraper. With bevel rubbing tools they are very crisp. Also notice the difference in tearout with the scraper tools. The Skew and the Osprey left a surface that doesn't have to be sanded other than to maybe knock down a few minor less than perfect areas to blend them into each other better. Easily done with 400 or 600 grit.





this photo shows the difference in scraping with a freshly sharpened EZ wood tool on the top and on the bottom I used the Osprey as a scraper and this tool was used by students in 2 all day classes and by me many times to clean up problem areas in my mirrors. A pretty noticeable difference in tearout if the photos actually show it.

I feel I should make that statement. EZ wood tools have helped a lot of new turners get into and enjoy wood turning. The same is true with the Hunter Hercules and Osprey. The reason is, they have almost no learning curve and that's a good thing. Especially for the occasional wood turner who just wants to finish a project. What I was trying to show in the article above is that it is well worth your time to learn to use bevel rubbing tools.

I didn't mention one of the big differences between a bowl gouge and an EZ wood style tool. When turning green wood the bowl gouge throws long shavings away from your face. It is so enjoyable when you are watching those long ribbons coming off the tool. With the scrapers you don't get long ribbons and it often throws them right back into your face. EZ wood tools even sells a deflector shield to keep them out of your face. With the Hunter tools you can aim the shavings a little but in scraper mode they still come up toward your face.

This is true, plus they are easy to make for almost nothing which has let some people I know do some woodturning they might otherwise have have trouble affording. And some people seem to be perfectly happy with the results and that is fine, at least they are playing with wood!

The problem might be be people who start using them and never try anything else, thinking cheap carbide scrapers and 80 grit sandpaper is just the way woodturning is. That is where your educational efforts might really pay off.
