Request for information about wood toxicity
Andi Wolfe
I'm working on a couple of articles for AAW - one for the website and one for the journal - about wood toxicity. I've spent quite a bit of time reading academic literature, mostly from dermatology journals and other medical journals dealing with toxicology. These articles offer review of case studies dealing with wood toxicity. What I would like to add to that are stories from woodturners. So, if you have ever had a reaction to a particular wood or different wood species, I would be very interested in hearing from you.
Questions for you to consider:
1. Which wood did you have a reaction to? (Trade name, botanical name if you know it).
2. Where did you obtain the wood (cut it fresh yourself, obtained it from a dealer (you can be specific if you like), at a wood show, etc.)?
3. What were your symptoms?
4. How long had you worked with the wood before having a reaction?
5. Did you seek medical help? If so, what was your diagnosis and treatment, and did the treatment resolve your issue?
6. After a first reaction, did you react to any other species? If so, which one(s)?
7. What safety measures have you implemented in your work environment to reduce exposure?
You can respond here if you like, respond on my public FB page (https://www.facebook.com/Andi.Wolfe.Woodturning/), or email me (my email is in my AAW profile info).
Many thanks for your assistance in my project.
Kind regards - Andi Wolfe
