I've always believed that any body parts that get between the tool rest and the spinning wood are going to be hurt pretty badly. You just confirmed that theory.

Sorry for your injury but you aren't the first turner to get banged up. I hear stories all the time of polishing rags getting caught inside bowls and the orthopedic surgery necessary to fix things.

So thank you for the lesson. One more thing I don't have to try to see if it hurts. Hope you heal quickly. I look forward to seeing your work. And I really am sorry you got hurt. Pain is never fun.

John, Sorry to hear about the accident, and not really wanting to make light of it, but did the spindle break out? I was just wondering how you managed to get your hand out?

the tool rest was at an angle so as soon as it pulled my thumb in it sort of spit it out to area that had a gap. Still I had to be calm enough to hold my thumb in that gap so I didn't get it into the chuck and reach over and turn the lathe off. I think I said something like "oh you silly lathe" Probably was 4 letters rather than 4 words.

When I went back out to finish the turning I switched to a really short tool rest That would have solved the entire problem. OH well, waiting for some epoxy to dry and then will go out and finish the project although I may have to take the wife to the doctor which is an hour away so this project may not get finished until late tonight or tomorrow.

Tools are pretty stupid. I've heard that, like stupid animals (cows and such), tools cannot understand words with more than four letters. That explains the vocabulary that's commonly heard in many of our shops. You really have to dumb it down for the tools to understand.

Oh no! I'm glad it wasn't worse. THANK YOU for the reminder.

The nail on one finger of my left hand has grown about 1/2 way back now after a different sort of stupid wood-related injury months ago - I pinched the end of the finger between a log and the lip of the tractor bucket. (X-ray showed the bone broken at the end. Sure put a dent in my piano and guitar playing.) It doesn't seem right that a tiny piece of one finger should hurt so much!

Yeah John (both of you) I used a really big hammer to properly address the last joint on my finger. Driving a 2x4 under a sagging header. The x-ray showed a strong resemblance to a glass bottle shot with a BB gun. Radiating cracks going everywhere. JL, be well sir.

My theory: the VERY first stupid error, bloody or not, you are too tired to turn, stop for the day! Sometimes I stop 15 seconds after I start! Glad that you can still hold up TEN!

Glad you were not dragged in and hurt more seriously!

Good reminder to us all that even a highly skilled and experienced turner can be injured if there's even the slightest bit of inattention.

Wit temps up in the 30's I was going to try a new (and somewhat dangerous) tool after supper, but I think I'll do that tomorrow when I'm more alert and less tired.

People will ask what dye you used on that piece (like the unique color of the Red Violin)...
