The Katy trail thru Mo from near St. Louis to Kansas City is a great trail. Part of it is on the bluffs overlooking the Missouri River. No mountains though. If you decide to take it there are a number of neat towns along the trail with B&B's. Being an abandoned RR right of way the grades are easy. About 240 miles. If you decide on it, I live near the western end of the trail in Lees Summit Mo.

I ride a rail trail here in Peoria. Paved in the city, crushed rock in the country. It's called the Rock Island Trail. Yup, same history as the song Rock Island Line.

I'll look it up your suggestion. I went over to the Mississippi River to ride part of The Great River Road this fall. Flat as a pancake and about 2' about the water in some places. Bluffs would be nice!

Matson Hill park in St Charles County Mo is Just off the Katy Trail with 6 miles of steep bike trails.

The Katy trail is 237 miles long If you get tired of the flat rail bed you can ride hilly Highway 94 that parallels the trail and river. West of Washington 94 has much less traffic.

I live in West Tennessee and love it but I tend to think of it as pretty flat and boring, at least compared to most places I've lived. One place that comes to mind is "Land Between the Lakes" in West Kentucky and Tennessee. It's a vast national park along a hilly ridge between Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake. No commercial development whatsoever inside the park.
