Post on Facebook, Arrowmont is burning

Dick Coers

From a Bill May, on Facebook about 1 hour ago, partial quote from his posting; "I am stuck in a line of cars evacuating Gatlinburg as I try to get to our house which is now threatened. I am making this one post because I am being inundated with calls and messages wanting an update. All Arrowmont personnel are safe. When I left campus the fire was approaching from the hillside above campus. Two of our dorms are gone and Red Barn was surrounded by fire."

I've personally never been there, but know many on Woodcentral have and thought I should share the news.

Looks like rain may be on the way, too late

Keith Newton

I just checked the radar, and it appears a light rain should be falling, but what they needed was a frog-strangler yesterday.

bummer, I tried to look it up last night but my computer wasn't working properly. Hope everyone got out OK. What a bad way to start a workshop.

I read another post

Dick Coers

A post from Gatlinburg showed a readout from a remote automated weather station. It showed the temperature reading at 8:30 pm, last night, of 108 degrees. Likely that it was lost in the fire soon after.

A recent update from Arrowmont .......

JamieDonaldson

....director Bill May says that they lost 2 of the older dorms, but the primary structures of classrooms and dining hall are now safe. Thank goodness, that would be a terrible loss to the craftpeople of the region.

It's a loss to many people. I've been to Arrowmont 10 times in the last 12 years, and I've learned more there - and received more inspiration there - than I can even begin to describe. This is tragic on many levels. I hope that some of it will be spared, including the wood studio.

Wild Wing and Hughes Hall are gone. They were the two newest housing buildings on campus. A storage shed burned. The Red Barn still stands, as well as all other buildings on campus.
