Inverter parameters

Doe anyone have or know where I can get the parameter settings for a Powermatic 3520b. I had to replace the inverter on my lathe and need the parameters to get it to run. Powermatic does not offer any help any except to buy a new inverter from them. Thanks for any and all help.

I have only worked on a couple of inverter installations. These were converting single phase motors to 3 phase motors on metal lathes.

The inverter manual provided the details on how to set the many parameters, but the issue is setting the parameters to match the motor.

Both used the same Hitachi inverter which had a setting to learn the motor settings.

The inverter was set to a learn/test mode, then the inverter was started in this mode and it tested the motor and set the parameters.

Does your inverter have a manual which describes such a function?

When the inverter on my Jet 1642 went out l bought a used one from E-bay. With the help of a friend, to get the proper code peramiters, we found another turner with the same model I have. Went through the programming on his inverter and then duplicated it on my unit, worked like a charm.

I guess the lesson to be learned from this is if you have a VSD with an inverter you should go out and open the box and write down all the parameters. And then write down where you put the note so you can find it when you need it!!! I probably should go do that right now. Ron.

Hey, that's what I did with my 1642! I wrote them in the Delta inverter programming book that came with the lathe and keep it with the lathe manual. I was interesting to see which parameters were changed from the default.

These programming books are available as a PDF on line if anyone doesn't have one. Good education to read through it also.

I if I'm not mistaken, the 185 page manual referenced is the manual for the inverter from the (inverter) manufacturer. It shows factory settings for the unit when shipped to Powermatic. Powermatic then changes some of these settings so the inverter will drive the lathe. You will still need the specific programming settings for your lathe. I did see one poster who said they had the codes. The other option is to find another lathe like yours and copy the programs on it.

I have been happily turning again since I replaced my damaged powerline, starter switch and inverter. The codes I received worked like magic, but the ones I got came off the earlier inverter model which does not have a fan. Does anybody have a fan setting I could have? As it is, the fan doesn't shut off unless I turn off the breaker to the lathe.

I too have a new inverter with.a fan. I just let it be a reminder to unplug the lathe when I'm finished turning.

What is the exact brand and model of your VFD? Did you look in the manual?

If you download a PDF copy of the manual you can search for the word "fan" and see if there are any parameters that concern it or if there is a setting to have it come on only when the VFD exceeds a certain temperature. I looked at the manual for the VFD on my PM3520b and there is no such setting on it that I could find.

You could always take it apart and disconnect the fan wires or put a switch in series with the fan to turn it off. However, without knowing more about the VFD, the parameters, the motor, and the load this may be a very bad idea.

If it is built with a fan that runs all the time, I suspect it is for a reason. Disabling it may cause premature failure. Then you may have to buy another VFD. Maybe the reason some of the older Delta inverters on the PM and Jet have failed is because they did not come with a fan. I replaced a failed VFD with a model with a fan and I like to hear it run. Like Hal mentioned, it reminds me the lathe is powered up.

May not have a temp sensor

Have a vfd on a air handler for a new building. Fan makes a whine, but does not have a temperature sensor. Less costly to build a unit with the fan running full time, and the fan does not use many watts. Unfortunatly it is a severe annoyance for occupants. Shutting the power off fixes the noise, and luckily the air handler is needed only for occasional crowds.

You may not have a sensor or a delay timer on the motor operation and no control over the fan.

(My lathe has the delay timer that shuts off the fan several minutes after the motor power is shut off)
