who makes the big demo tools?

Jim Barbour

I have seen several sets of large wooden tool models used for demonstrating the various gouges, etc. in a size that folk can see. These are about three feet long with the handle, made from either maple or beech and are purely for illustration purposes.

My question is, who makes them? I think I would like to have a set for teaching, but I suspect they are out of reach.

thanks,

~ jim

I forgot who it was but fortunately the AAW has a link to all of the add sponsors on it's site and I found him. Interesting tools. I thought they were a little pricey for my purposes but might be useful for others.

Thanks John. I had looked in nearly all the corners, but missed that one. All of is really is better than one of us.

Yes, they are a bit high, but might be appropriate for a school as opposed to an individual.

I used chunks of 2 x 4's to make a spindle gouge and a skew on the bandsaw. I use a couple of 4x4"s for two different bowl gouge grinds. Joe

I htink I may make a set as well, but the ones Tom makes sure are nice.

Jim,

Have you considered making them? It should be fairly easily if you have flat wood tools.

I made an oversized skew chisel for teaching purposes. I want to make a spindle gouge and bowl gouge and a scraper. The scraper will be easy but for the gouges I was thinking about passes on a big cylinder with a router or shaper.

The big skew has been so helpful for showing the angles needed to cut deep v-grooves. I also made an oversized spindle with a deep v-groove in it. I still need to add a bead and cove.

I made some of my own bowl gouges. I started with sections of baseball bat rejects and used the cove cutting technique on my tablesaw. I used 2x4 as fences and ran them at an angle across the blade raising it a little at a time. Worked great-Kind of a v-shaped flute.
