SEGMENTED BOWLS CALCULATOR

Carl Barton

>A few months ago I found a free calculator online for calculating the angels for segemtned rings. All you had to do was provide the number of rings you wanted to use. I saved this on my hard drive and was going to use it, but fate stepped in and last week my hard drive crashed. This was not so bad since my LOML bought this laptop for me about four months ago and DELL replaced it. But I no longer have the calculator.

I was hoping someone might recall what website this calculator located. I had been home after a long hospital stay and only found the website after having sat in front of the computer for days.

Thank you

Carl

>What are you trying to calculate?

If it is the angle of the cut-

All you have to do is divide the # of segments you want into 180

If you want 12 segments divide 12 into 180 = 15 degree on both sides

Jim, I like the simplicity, But

>It might be worth stating that a square cut which is 90 would be considered 0. which is how a miter saw scale would read the answer to your formula.

So If I were to choose 8 segments, I would set the miter saw at 22.5, which really cuts an angle of 67.5, which is what it would read if square was shown as 90 instead of 0.

Your formula gives the reciprocal angle, which may be just what you need to set the saw, but falls short of giving 180 for the sum of the angles of a triangle.

>Carl, I don't know where to find the calculator, however, I believe if you use the following formula, you can achieve your goal..

360 divided by number of pieces, then divide by 2.

For example, 360/8 will give you the angle of the joint. (45 degrees) Divide by 2 and get the angle of each cut. (22.5 degrees)

I hope this helps.

>Carol,

I have seen this site before. In the Navy we had a saying, KISS, Keep It Simple Sailor. While this calculator no doubt is very good, for this simple sailor it seems to be way to complicated, but thank you for sending it to me.

The one I had was a very simple calculator. More than likely I will find it again and since my retirement I have plenty of time to look. The weather was BEAUTYFUL today and I got out to the shop and turned a lidded bowl. It was the first one that I was really proud of. Now if I only had a camera to take a picture of it to show everyone else.

>Carol,

I live in Virginia Beach, VA. My friend is going to lend me her's, she say's she is going to drop by the house and drop it off, but.....that's ok, she want's me to help her build a Murphy bed so I know she will come by the house soon. The weather here is in the 70's the last couple of days so I am thinking she just might stop by.

Thank you for the offer.

>Never being good at math, I've had to come up with simple ways to do the job. ( when I need sines & co-sines I ask my 10th grage daughter ) When I do segmented demos for clubs I find a lot of people that have read a segmented book ( or dvd ) and think segmented is too complicated and never try it. I try to make it as simple as possible. Photo is my jig that tells you how wide to cut segment for a particular diameter circle - no math!
