reverse turning DUH

>I had about a dozen turners out to my place for a hands on turning day this last Saturday. We had a great time and made a garage full of shavings. I went into the shop this morning to finish up a vase one of the guys started. I had shown them how to use ring tools, hook tools and of course gouges.

I could not get the ring tool to cut. I sharpened it, at least I thought, and it still wouldn't cut. I was tired and didn't feel like sharpening it again so I pulled out my boring bar. It wouldn't cut. I sharpened the cutter and it still wouldn't cut. I pulled out another bar with smaller cutter and it still wouldn't cut. I thought man this is the hardest wood I've ever turned so I pulled out my trusty bowl gouge, sharpened it and darn if if it wouldn't cut either. THAT'S when I saw the darn reverse switch on my lathe. Someone had used the reverse mode, probably to sand and I never thought to look at it. I never use reverse. Boy did I feel dumb.

>Reminds me - I met a woman at a party a couple of times. They always made her tell the same two stories.

One was when she was getting ready for work, doorbell rings, she goes downstairs in her bathrobe and nothing else to get the door. Guy standing there, very upset, has hit a dog, and wants to know if it is hers. About this time, the cigarette in her bathrobe pocket catches the robe on fire, and she throws it aside. Young man doesn't realize about the fire, and has no idea what to make of the naked dancing woman in front of him.

The other one she is leaving work late on a snowy night. She cleans snow off the car, gets inside, fires it up, and very, very slowly starts creeping across the driveway. Radio is on and she is singing along. Then she sees a form approaching the car from the driver side. She thinks to herself, "man, this guy is something else, how can he walk as fast as I'm driving?". A moment later, he's banging on the car window saying "Lady, what the H are you doing????" - the front of her car was pushing into one of the big parking lot lights, her wheels were spinning, the car wasn't moving one inch, and she had no idea.

>An engineer friend at work years ago was drilling some 1/2" holes in his floor joists to run a wire. Drill wasn't cutting so he found another bit which was no better. Went up to the hardware store and bought a new one which was almost no better than the ones he had. He then found his electric drill was going the wrong way.

>John- don't you know that running the lathe in reverse puts the wood back on!!?? You can use it like "replay" when you make a bad cut!

Next time I'll turn the boring bar upside down and go the other side of the bowl.

I should have picked up on it sooner. I was teaching a workshop and a student was having trouble. I walked over and took the tool and I couldn't make it cut either. Then I realized they had turned it on in reverse.

>I picked up an old power drill extension not to long ago, which basically causes the holes to be drilled at a ninety degree angle (for hard to reach spots). The screw holding the chuck in place was bent, however, so I needed to remove the chuck to replace it.

The thing would not move. I mean to tell you, I tried everything. I used vice-grips, hammers, oil, unscrewing the housing on the unit, tore apart another defunct drill I had to see how that one was assembled, you name it, I tried it. Nothing. I let it sit for about a week. Then I took it to work, and took a walk with it over lunch, to adopt a plan of attack.

I spun the chuck open and shut, open and shut. Then I just grabbed the chuck and turned it, and what do you know - righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.

I've been turning the inside of some bowls in reverse, eespecially those undercut some. It is easier to see into the bowl without the bending over the ways and easier to hold the gouge rather than having to reach way out and point it back towards me.

This does require locking down the chuck so it won't unscrew.

>I was helping a friend set up a display at a flower show last winter and needed to drill some holes in some bamboo. I did not have the right size drill bit. One of the other guys said he had a new set he just bought at a yard sale. Put one in the drill, not working. Checked to see if I had the drill in forward, did. Got to looking at the bits and they were left hand twist. Maybe that's why he got the whole set for $5.

I have never seen left hand twist bits before and I bet the guy who sold them had not either that's why my buddy got the whole set for $5.
