Beware of "service@paypal.com"

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Not at all an unusual email address to show up in my inbox. Almost anytime I make a transaction with PayPal I see one from that address, usually a receipt or something for a valid transaction.

But yesterday one showed up and I clicked on it because it is a valid email address I'd expect something from. The message said my paypal account had been flagged for unusual activity and deactivated to protect me from fraud. It also said that I needed to check in to reinstate it.

It was as real sounding as it gets. But something didn't quite sit right, because I'd been using paypal several times over the last week, just the day before in fact. After a close examination of the url they supplied as a link I realized it was a scam - it was going to take me, no doubt, to a fake site where they'd get me to log in with my paypal credentials and then use them on the real paypal site.

I almost did it, and I've been doing this kind of thing a long, long time. I was really surprised that I almost fell for it. I can't imagine how many less computer aware folks fall for this.

>Dont feel bad Mike. Last night on CNN they had a phisher on the phone that said they send out about ten million of those email scams a day and they may get as many as 2 million responses a week! Of course they situate themselves in countries that wont prosecute Internet fraud artists.

>I recieved the same message as well. I was stupid enough to click on the link though without thinking. Luckily, my anti-everything software wouldn't allow the page to open!

>Hover your pointer (cursor) over the link in the email and at the bottom of your screen it will show the real URL. If it doesn't say www.paypal.com it's a fake, but even if it does your're better off to go directly to paypal through your browser rather than the link in the email.

>That is what I did Darrell. Examine the URL on the hover. I'm just pointing out how extremely authentic this one is. I see these types of things all of the time - they almost never get me to fall for it, but this one almost did.

>Maybe I'm just lucky, but I've gotten a paypal scam message and/or ebay scam message just about every single day for the past several months. I've determined that if paypal actually needs to contact me (other than a receipt for a transaction), they'll interrupt me for information during my next transaction. Same goes for Ebay.

Don't particularly like these scammers/hackers.

>Don't feel bad, it's a old scam.

Now if you get a email from my friend Neubma Nemxa in Nigeria that is something different.

He's sending me a check for $630,000,000 and I get to keep 20%. It's a sad story how his country has exiled him. But I'm helping him transfer the money out of his country so he can help the orphans that are here from his land.

Some of those have trojans attached.

Carole in VA

>At least that was the warning one of our local ISPs sent out. Don't now if the trojan is actually attached or downloads when you go to the site.

>You are right, Mike. Some of the more recent phishing emails are very well done, and it's hard to tell they are fake except that the context doesn't feel right. Though some are comical, in that they have sweated all the details to make the email look authentic, then have some text written in poor 6th grade grammar that you know didn't come from paypal, or Citibank.

I get them all the time supposedly from all sorts of banks from all over the country. I decided to follow one, to see what would happen. I clicked on the link, went to a very professional looking site that wanted to know my SS#, card numbers, etc. I made them up, clicked on the send button, they thanked me, and then sent me to the real bank's site. I'm sure a lot of people get fooled as they get more sophisticated and "professional" in their attempts.

>Mike,

one small detail: when real Paypal writes to you, the message begins with "Dear Mike Schwing", not "dear Paypal user".

this is one way (don't know if it will last long) to detect scam.

(I learnt this from a real "beware of scam" mail from Paypal)
