Just not a shop day :(

>Went out this morning after taking my dog to the vet (they found she has erlichiosis again)and decided to make a bunch of glue blocks. Pulled a 4' by 15" wide piece of poplar off the shelf and put it on the crosscut sled on the Uni. Started it thru the saw and about 3/4 of the way through, all heck broke loose. I held onto it for dear life and hit the kill switch with my knee. Still haven't figured out exactly what happened on that. Perhaps I let it drift off the rear fence of the sled? Anyway, finished it off on the band saw, then marked out about 10 glue blocks. Cut out five of them, then on the sixth...BAMMM! My fairly new Viking Band Saw blade broke at the weld. This was the first time I have had a blade break, but it was the second heart attack in the space of 45 minutes! On the way to the trash can with the blde, I managed to catch the thing on my drill which was sitting on the bench. That crashed to the floor, breaking the bit and taking with it an entire big box of screws which went everywhere. At that point I just kept going, dropped the blade in the trash, hit the lights and locked the shop. It's one of those days!

>When you are having a snake-bit day, there's no getting around it. The only thing to do is surrender.

In my youth, I played a lot of street hockey. One day a kid who was a pretty good goalie had a total meltdown of ability. EVERYTHING went in the net. When we were done and he went to go home, he stood at the end of our driveway waiting for a car to pass. Then he turned to me and said "I might as well walk out in front of it. It'd probably go right through me."

>Whenever I get a small cut or make a small technical mistake I take a 5 minute break. When I get 2 in a row, or a larger mistake I take a major break...often for the rest of the day. Sometimes it's good to get out of the shop and do other things. I'm glad your mistakes today didn't result in any injuries.

Hopefully your box of screws did not entwine themselves in a bunch of shavings!

>Carole, you chose wisely. I have had those days like that and the most prudent thing to do is what you did before you get hurt. Obviously your mind wasn't in it today, so the best thing is to find something else. I learned that after killing a couple of very expensive air racers. An expnesive lesson, but at least it was learned and not repeated. Think you have just learned the same. Besides its a good day to reread "The Book of Raffan"..........

>I sometimes have those days driving. I am not qualified to drive home. It would be smart to call for backup and have them drive.

Get a magnet to pick up the screws, Not too strong. I have one that is more trouble than it's worth. To hard to get the screws off the magnet.

I bought extra chuck jaw screws because I figure one of them is going into the shavings or the DC soon enough.

Glad you did not get hurt. I can bring myself to buy one of those $100+ carbide Band saw blades. They break too.

>Some days you get the bear and some days the bear get you.

Having a band saw blade break while in use is almost as much fun as having your chain saw throw a chain.

>Carole, if that is a fairly new blade I would ask for a replacement. If the weld breaks it was faulty. I have silver soldered dozens of blades and have never had one break at the weld.

>You might be right, Don. I certainly wasn't pushing the blade with 3/4" poplar! Lee Valley says the Viking blades were "formerly listed as Timberwolf blades." It was a 3/8" 3 tpi blade.

>Well, I'm glad your OK. When I have a day like that my chances are 50/50. 50 that if I still hang in there I might make unsual progress or 50 that I hang up the smock and type on-line. =o)

What I really want to say is to rescue that blade from the trash, look in you phone book for a tool sharpening service and find one who sells bandsaw blades made up from bulk rolls. Take yours in and pay a few bucks to have it re-welded. It will probably last until the teeth melt off.
