Good New, Bad News, I'm In Trouble Now!

Ron in Drums PA

>My family has been telling me that my turnings are taking over the house. They also have been telling me I should start selling more of them to make room in the house. I have sold a few items on a one to one basis but I never cared about going to craft shows, (buying or selling) so I never bothered looking into this venue.

Anyway, this weekend, one of my wife's girl friends calls and says that she is unable to do an art show where she sells custom made jewelry and wondered if I would be interested in taking her spot to sell. Well of course my family talked me into doing this and now I'm committed.

Good News:

I sent over a couple of photos and they accepted me to display and sell my work.

Bad New:

Yesterday I went around the house collecting items worthy of selling. I gathered up everything and placed them on the kitchen table. My wife comes in and says "Oh! you can't sell this. . . or this" and walks away with a arm full of items. Then my teen aged daughter comes in and gathers a few things "These are my favorites, you can't sell these" and she takes them off the table. Next, my youngest daughter, hearing all the commotion, comes in "Daddy, since you are getting rid of these can I have this and this, pleeeeese!" She has me wrapped around her little finger. How can I say no.

I'm In Trouble:

All I have is one bowl left to sell and the show is June 17-18. This is no longer a hobby!

>Good news - you have 3 weeks, including Memorial day weekend.

Bad news - the weather is going to be great.

>I think they need to understand that it was their prodding that helped to get you into the show, so they need to be willing to part with some of the pieces they like (and were telling you to get rid of). Maybe let them each pick one or two, with the promise that you'll make a turning for each of them, so the new ones will be even more special. Good luck, and congratulations on the show.

>I'm with Fred. There are three pieces I've turned in my house that are not for sale. My wife's favorite piece, my favorite piece, and the piece that bit me but I managed to turn into something nice anyway.

Everything else goes to the show. You'll miss a piece every once in a while but then you'll turn a nicer and better one to replace it. If there are three of them, I'd suggest one each and get busy turning if you're serious about selling your work.

Otherwise, I've got a shelf full of stuff I'll sell you at "special wholesale" prices with my name on the bottom. :-)

>Ladies who read this, please accept this as humor from one husband to another and the father of a little girl: what you are facing is female logic. The only thing you can do is surrender.

Make fifty bowls over the weekend and hustle them out to the car in the middle of the night. Failing that, take the one bowl you have left and sell it for $15,000.

Actually, here's something you could do for real. Split the procedes with your family. Daughter one, give me Y number of bowls to sell. I won't sell it for less than Y, you get %, I get % (or whatever split makes sense to you).

The nice reality of it is that your wife and daughters really like your work, they see some daddy/husband legacy and in it for a time when you won't be around, or when the daughters grow up and move out, or whatever, and it is kind of hard to begrudge them that - although you might be able to suggest that fewer keepsakes will be less of a Bxxxx to deal with over the years, unless your daughters end up living in 90-room mansions.

>Dave Said: "The nice reality of it is that your wife and daughters really like your work, . . ."

That's my take on it too Dave - I wouldn't trade what they gave me that night for any cash sale. Thanks for noticing.

But now I have some work ahead of me. Luckly I have a number of dried bowls and Dave's alcohol method to help me out.

>"Okay, ladies. You have identified the need to sell some stuff to make room for the new (and Improved) stuff that will come off the New (3520B?) Lathe. Please be so kind as to select the items to sell from the assortment presently in the house, and place them on the kitchen table so that I can arrange for sales booth space."

Then get ready to do some flatwork to make more shelfspace. |;-}}

>I agree with what was said, let them each take one of their favorites and you can even take pictures of the other ones they like. They can get what's left if you don't sell them. THEN still crank out as much work as you can do.

Now, welcome to the club. It's not as much fun when you have to do it for a living. Weight lifting in a gym is fun, moving furniture ain't.=o)

>Ron,

It appears you have a pretty solid fan base going here.........and that's always good news! Face it, you're probably never gonna make any money in woodturning anyway. Just enjoy the adoration.

>Yeah, they put a smile on my face that night.

Luckily I don't need to supplement my earnings doing woodturning. The idea behind woodworking is to get away from the stress at work. Any typical day I have a dozen deadlines to meet, all from clients who think they are the only ones that give me business.

I reviewed my stock and setup a schedule that should give me enough (maybe not allot) to display. Lets see what happens.

I convinced my daughters to display their greeting cards. When I group production, I can kick out 10 of the same pens in 4 hours. I think these two items will compliment each other. Besides now it will be fun having the girls help me. Here is their website, it not finished yet, but you can get the idea of their work. http://greatnotecards.com/
