Going to Canada

Bill Grumbine (Kutztown PA)

>Greetings all

The wonderful people at the Woodturning Guild of Ontario have run out of demonstrators, and so they have asked me to come up and fill some time for them. So, I will be appearing up there this coming Saturday, if anyone here wants to come along and say hello, throw rotten vegetables, etc.

The last time I was in Canada for any length of time (this does not count an hour or two at Niagra falls) was for Expo '67. I was all of eight years old. I understand that where we are going they do speak English, although a little differently than we do here in eastern PA. I will never forget my kid's first impression of our own Jim Shaver when he came to our home in Easton. "Daddy, he has an accent!" This week it will be me who has the accent I suppose, but I am really looking forward to this trip. I hope to see some of you there.

>Hi Gerry

International yes, acclaimed, I don't know! They were looking for an expert, and you know what Mark Twain said about an expert - some guy from out of town.

>Bill might have been the kid my wife mowed over on one of her many rushes to the bushes to cover her morning sickness from our pending first born. I have always wanted an opportunity to appologise to all who had to watch that scene. In retrospect, the timing of that trip was probably poor judgment on our part. Exiting the crowded theatre in the round with the 360 degree movie screens after viewing the flying carpet ride was a real adventure. Vertigo and pregnancy don't mix.

>That couldn't have been me Carole, I was always a model of behavior (I won't say what kind of behavior though!). Besides, I was eating a hamburger.

My biggest memories of the Expo were:

disappointment that the Russians didn't really have an antigravity room like we had all heard.

waking up one morning floating in our tent on our air mattresses because our campground had flooded.

watching some very pretty young French lady with a very heavy accent give my grandfather and father directions when we were lost. Neither one heard a word she said, for reasons I understood later on in life. My mother and grandmother got every word though, and my father and grandfather got a few extra after the fact.

>Bill -

If you have a passport, make sure you've got it with you. They've been getting to be a bit difficult lately at the border with that sort of thing. You would also do well to have some documentation with you that explains why you are coming into the country (like the invite from the club). Chances are you won't have a problem, but you never know, and they have been a bit of a pill lately from the stories I'm hearing at work.

I live in Buffalo, and will think good thoughts when you drive by.

Me, also, too!

>I remember riding the gondola over the Expo and looking down on all the people and tree sculptures. Unfortunately, I dropped my hotdog from the gondola. I was tempted to send my 7-Up after it to help clean up the mess.

Loved the giant geodesic globe.

>Hi David

I sure hope I don't need a passport, since I do not have one. Besides Canada, the only foreign country I have visited is New Jersey! One of my wife's co-workers who travels to Niagara frequently recommended birth certificates, and none of us looks like terrorists or anything. Think that will help? ;-)

I can see it now, the border guard asking to search my turning muscle to see if there is a bomb in there - only if I eat Mexican buddy!

>Bill,

We go to Canada every year, they ask a few questions and that's it, only once we were asked to show our driver's license.

Have fun

New Border Rules Coming

TomW In SouthJersey

>Just an FYI - Here is an excerpt from a fed press release that outlines some new border crossing changes. I have the rest if anyone needs it.

~~~
Under the proposal, U.S. citizens would be required to present their passports:
- By Dec. 31, 2005, if returning from Caribbean nations, Bermuda, Central and South America.
- By Dec. 31, 2006, if returning by air or sea from Canada and Mexico.
- By Dec. 31, 2007, if returning across border crossings with Canada and Mexico.
>Well, I'm going to Canada to but in July. I'll be in Calgary taking a course with Richard Raffan. Silly me thought I could wait to make hotel reservations. The lady at the desk tells me that July 8th through the 15th is 'Stampede Week'. Being the foreigner that I am I ask several times what is that. She answers me in a foreign voice each time I ask [i.e. not American, Canadian, or Israeli] 'That's 60% more per night'.
I found out it is a large cowboy party that lasts one week. How do I explain this to my wife? 'Yes, darling, I'm only going for Raffan. I didn't know it was a cowboy Octoberfest in July, honost I didn't' =o)
I think there was such a large opposition from Mexio about the crossings from Mexico that Bush decided against the requirments from Canada and Mexico. I spent too much time in Mexico when I was younger to care to go back now and Canada is too far north for a trip right now so I'm not concerned either way. My ideal vacation would be to take the cross Canada train trip.
>I would have agreed with your comment about coming back to the U.S. being tougher than getting into Canada until last week.
The place I work owns facilities in the U.S. and Canada. Last week, on a trip to the place in Quebec, our guys were detained, and threatened with non-entry into the country. The were advised to carry a letter signed by an officer of the company describing the reason for the visit, duration, etc. These were just a couple of guys in a car, one of whom IS a company officer.
I'm not sure what is going on, but the friendly border is getting less friendly.
