What to do with this branch?

Mike Schwing from Md.

>I don't have a picture of it, its just a common 4" thick black cherry branch, but I need to do something with it.

Here's why.

2 Fridays ago I had a colonoscopy at 8:30am (I'm fine as it turns out). My Dad brought me home at about 10:30. I then took a little nap to sleep off the effects of the general anesthesia, which left me lightheaded and a little disoriented.

Woke up at about noon, and probably still suffering from impaired judgement, I decided to take my 2 golden retrievers for a walk in the woods just a few hundred yards from my house.

While in the woods, the 4" thick tree branch in question fell out of the canopy above and konked me on the head, knocking me totally unconscious! I didn't hear it coming, didn't hear a crack, just remember a pain and then I came to lying on the ground, with my youngest dog licking the blood from my gushing head. (it was turning out to be quite a day)

I stumbled around and figured out that this branch had fallen on my head, and then stumbled out of the woods probably looking like something from a horror movie.

Still not thinking clearly, and home alone, I had a momentary thought that I perhaps cracked my skull, but decided that another nap would be a fine idea, but first had to post about it on my fishing buddies' website. Woke up a bit later, showered the blood off of my head and spent the rest of the evening with an intense headache, but everything's fine.

I'm thinking it might have been a payback for slicing up his befallen neighbor just 100 feet away. I have sometimes worried about stuff falling on me during windy days, guess it wasn't misplaced.

Now what would you do with this branch? I gotta make something out of it, and hopefully make it suffer at the same time.

>Hi Mike,

I agree that you should do something with it. It has already told you something.

How about...carving slowly with a dull chain saw or turning a part of it with really dull tools or turn some of it with 40 grit paper...make it suffer!

On the other hand, you could take a small piece and make something nice to be kept close to you as a constant reminder that we have to be carefull in this wild world of ours, no matter where we are or what we are doing.

Really glad to here you are OK, on both medical conditions.

>Hi Y'all,

Mike, glad you are in good spirits after such a weird day.

To me the solution seems obvious. Cut it into long strips, glue them back together interspersed by some other material, (plastic is evil enough) form it into a cutting board, then use it for cutting bait.

Finish suggestion - vinegar.

Regards Sam Simpson.

A Helmet!

>Mike with your creativity and skills transform that branch into a protective helmet, to wear in your walks. No need to think on vengance, you were walking under the influence... and not fully aware.

>Yikes! I'm glad you're still around. Woodcutters call those things Widowmakers, for a reason.

Most come down on unsuspecting heads when loosened by a different falling tree (also a reason driving a tractor through the woods can be very dangerous if you accidentlly bump a tree). Last fall I watched as a neighbor was dropping a large oak: half way down a limb broke loose, caught on another branch and flipped backwards, sending him to the hospital for 14 stitches in his scalp. This is the reason I ALWAYS wear a combo hard hat/hearing protector/face shield when cutting trees. This has saved my noggin from several good knocks over the years.

But just walking through the woods??? To have one fall unprovoked and "out of the blue" and hit you smack on the head must be exceedingly rare, akin to winning the lottery!

I like the mallet idea - you can turn a nice carving-style mallet in one piece - put a weight or heavier wood inside if you want to core out the pith. I made one to use around my lathe.

>I had a near miss walking in the woods several years ago. Windy day, hiking down a trail, and I heard an ominous cracking above my head. I took off, having no idea if I was putting myself in the path or getting out of the way. Good thing I moved. It was only a few inches in diameter, but probaly ten feet long.

Your dogs served you pretty well that day. I think they deserve a plaything - how about turning the branch into "bones" for the dogs to play with?

A proctologist probe

John Trant (Baltimore/DC area)

>I am glad you survived the day. It seems like you were getting it from both directions that day!

As a rememberance of this day, a proctologist probe would be perfect. Display it proudly to initiate questions from hose guests and you can regale them with your story. I am sure over the years, the story will get longer and better with each telling. Personally, I never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

John

PS: I have no idea if such a devise exists or what it looks like which gives you complete freedom to design it as you think a proctologist probe should look like!

>Facing a colonoscopy can make one a little nervous if they have never had one performed. I can ubnderstand your being a little testy last week. However once it is over you now know it is not a really big deal and a relief to kmow there are no problems. I've had a couple so far and drove myself home, an hour plus drive, after the first one. The second one is when I learned I wasn't supposed to drive for the rest of the day.(-: Didn't notice any more disorientation than normal either time. Of course that just shows what my normal state is. Glad you are ok, Mike.
