Straight off the old lathe

David

>I'm pretty new to this site to get very personal, but this is my latest turning. Well, maybe my wife's latest turning.

Michael Thomas, born May 9th at 6:42pm, 8 lbs, 8.7 ounces, 20 inches long. Not sure if this piece is oak or ironwood, but he's a chip off the old dad for sure. Mom and baby doing well, and big sis is doing well too. I'm still deciding whether I should finish this one with tung oil or baby oil. End grain might be a bit messy, but the overall surface is very smooth, so I won't have to sand any further. He's still kind of green.

>Green? It looks pink to me!

I am not sure I would show your wife this thread. She may not get the "warm fuzzies" by you telling the world she is an "old lathe". Remember the hormones are still raging so a man's interruption of humor may not be recoginized. At least this was true of my wife (both times!).

Congratulations on a job well done and best wishes for all three of you!!!

>You'll never in a million years turn anything that beautiful!

But don't give up turning. Put that photo by your lathe and it will be the standard of beauty to guide you...and your inspiration too.

And here's a sobering tidbit to 'bowl' you over: Michael will learn HALF of what he will in his entire life by age 5 or 6!

Re: Michael Thomas?

David

>Michael Thomas -

Sorry to steal your name. Actually, I've saddled this kid with a legacy name. Michael was his revolutionary war ancestor (I got my S.A.R. membership earlier this year), and his middle name is a fourth consecutive generation hand-me-down. In addition, I'm proving out a Mayflower connection on his mother's side, which is pretty much a slam dunk from what I have seen, it just takes time to put the paperwork together - forever with two little ones in the house.

>Hi David,

No worries on the name :) Like I said, Michael Thomas is a pretty good name!

I think it's really neat that you can give your children legacy names. For both of my kids, we gave them a first name not used (that we know of) in our families and a family middle name.

Neat stuff, good luck with the two little ones. Mine are getting bigger (4 and 7) and a little bit more independent each day.
