Hmmph! Kids!

Carole in VA

>Been going with the chainsaw since 9:00 and I'm definitely not used to it! Can hardly pick up my beer. After lunch, while we were wrestling with a 2 ton B&T trying to get this huge trunk onto the guy's trailer, I overheard the 14 year old kid that was helping say "She works right good for an older lady." I almost made him two feet shorter with my saw. :)

Dunno about this wood collecting...it will either get you in shape or kill you! I didn't even get much wood that I can use on my mini since the trunk had been promised to this guy. I brought home some crotch sections but have no clue how to cut them up. Oh well, I'm learning new stuff every day, so I guess I will figure it out. I did learn how to sharpen my chain today, out of necessity! LOL

Cutting up crotches.

Barry Irby

>Carole,

I've been trying to cut out some crotch pieces. there are several ways. Look at the three piths and visualize that they come together as a Y. One way is to slice right down the Y and produce two blanks that have a little bit of flame or feather on them. Then you can slice that layer off as a bowl blank or board for a platter. The feather needs to be in the bottom of the bowl and often there isn't very much, so platters may work better.

Another way is to just try for one blank and cut about an inch or two on each side of the y and turn a bowl.

A third way is to go for a hollow form that would stand vertically in the crotch with the trunk or single pith being at the bottom of the hollow form. Clear as mud?

I have not had a lot of luck and am beginning to have more respect for the pieces that have the wonderful feathers in them.

>Sounds like one of my kids.

Best response it, "Hey boy, you wanna see 125?" with the saw in your hand and a gleam in your eye.

I know what you mean about not knowing how to cut soomething up usefully. I just got 2 good sized cherry stumps delivered and I have no idea what to do next. But I'm sure there is something nice hiding in there somewhere.

>Barry,

I looked in the Turning Green Wood book tonight. He's got some really good diagrams and a good discussion on how to cut a crotch to make best use of the feathering.

>Carole,

The safest and easiest way to cut crutches I know is to cut the while the tree is still holding them, try that next time...

>I don't recommend actually CUTTING that young fella's crotch, but a little threat might go a long way !

Actually, as stupid as his comment was, you've already impressed him -- he just isn't wise enough yet to know how to say it.

>Some youth hockey coaches test to see if their charges are wearing cups by giving them a light tap with the stick where it counts. Just a thought as long as we're talking about crotches and chainsaws.

(By the way, if the kid isn't wearing one, he either tries to wince his way through it and regrets it immediately or won't let the coach ring the berries and heads back to the dressing room.)
