Ambrosia Maple Rare?

LaVerne Williams

>Newbie, posted on "messages" until I realized the turners have a special place all their own... Found a source for ambrosia maple, how grateful will my fiance be if I can get a half dozen logs? Is it a rare wood?

>If I weren't already married...

I'm fairly new myself, and can't speak to the rarity of the wood, but I think it is a very pretty maple, and it turns a heck of a nice bowl.

>LaVerne,

If he doesn't love you already, he should.

Get as much as you can. If it is pretty he will be blown away!

>Is Ambrosia a type of maple, or a result of it starting decay? Have been wood working for many years, but only stumbled into the name once I started turning. Am turning some stuff from a branch picked up last weekend. Cross section looked like a paint "splat", for lack of better terms. Am headed off this week to pick up portions of the trunk (2' dia).

>Ellis taught me well... The "paint splats" are a result of the ambrosia beetle crawling into a diseased or dead maple tree. Fungus follows through the burrows, and the beetle lives off the fungus. I guess ANY maple can become "ambrosia" maple, as long as the beetles like it...

>And how amusing is that, since my hobby (to counteract that of the woodturner) is, you guessed it, QUILTING. Ha.

Lurker chimes in *LINK*

Anthony

>Technically it's red maple (acer rubrum), "ambrosia" maples can red, silver and boxelder maples. Through some research I've found the insect is really the columbian timber beetle not the ambrosia beetle although ambrosia beetle is a generic term for many bark boring insects. The link below is a good source for information. A search for either insect wiil provide photos.

Now I'll go away again for a year or so!!

why double holes?

John K Jordan

>Why do I (almost) always see pairs of holes in the wood? Do the beatles travel in pairs (hard to belive) or bore their way back running parallel to a hole?

>If both beetle's are the same thing, how come they have different scientific names on the web site you provided?

>Actually, the beetle in question, about 1/8" long, hard shelled and brown has a fungus that grows on it's outside. This fungus rubs off the shell as it goes through the woood and if conditions are right (moisture) then the fungus grows and produces the staining.

This information came from what I consider to be a reliable source, book, not a forum. Sorry, cannot remember the book.

>They're not the same, the tree guy down the street calls everything "Them darn ambrosia beetles" but the scientist at the USDA knows the real names:)
