Second bowl - box elder

Fred G - Cincinnati

>This one turned out a little better than the maple bowl, and I was able to hold a more consistent wall thickness at about 1/4", thinning to about 1/8" at the rim. It was a piece a friend gave me just to experiment with. I actually launched it off the lathe while finishing the bottom, but didn't see the ding in the rim until I took the picture.

Inside

Fred G - Cincinnati

>I'm not real happy with the inside surface, but I think the figure turned out well, so hopefully it's not too glaring. Finish is blonde shellac, as is the maple bowl. One mistake (of many) I made was to give it to my friend after it was roughed out - He showed it to several people, including a woodworker or two that commented on the tearout and poor surface quality. There's a reason they call it "roughed" out. Next time it stays in my possession until it's finished.

Thanks for looking.

>Nice job. Not a damned thing wrong with this bowl. Nice profile, inside and out, and looks like a good finish, too. Second bowl? You're way ahead of my 2nd bowl.

Bowl gouge

Fred G - Cincinnati

>Just thought you'd get a kick out of my, um, grind. When I roughed the bowls out, the profile was stock, with corners still on the wings. I was nervous as anything, the tearout was terrible, and I bought a scraper to use for finishing. Finally got the guts to take it to the grinder freehand, and this is what resulted (the red is marker, not blood). Not only was it less nerve wracking not worrying so much about a catch, I didn't even use the scraper, so as bad as the grind looks, it worked pretty well.

If you've stuck with me to here, I appreciate your fortitude, so thanks for looking. I know my bowls aren't on the same level as the other stuff I see here, but it's a start.

>Fred, that bowl looks darn near perfect to me! You narrowed the base down a little on this one, which I like, and the box elder is gorgeous! That figure looks like a flower (maybe a Poinsettia!)

>Beautifully done bowl, my first didn't look that good.

Actually amazing considering the looks of that grind. Take a look at the upper left of this post, you'll see some grinds there.

Well Done!

Tom In Red Deer

>Very nice looking bowl. Lovely figure in the wood. Looks to me like a palm tree beside water, with a partial reflection on the other side.

Nothing wrong with the shape...elegant looking.

Don't look now, but I think you are HOOKED.

Thanks for the kind words

Fred G - Cincinnati

>I know I have a ways to go, though. I don't know if I'm hooked, but I do have another six rough bowls waiting to be finished. I also have a Wolverine jig waiting for me to set it up. Oh, and I got Mr. Grumbine's video last Christmas. Hmm, does kinda sound like I'm hooked, doesn't it? The maple bowl I didn't sign (practice), but the box elder bowl I did.

>Nice work, Fred. The gouge is a "tad" rough but the profile is one that I use a lot. The wolverine will fix the faceting. Well done!

>Man that bowl looks great. I thought it looked like a palm tree in the bottom of the bowl, with a few stray palm leaves on the ground. I hope I can do one like that after some practice.David

>That is BEAUTIFUL Fred, I have to agree with Carole in that the inside grain pattern reminds one of a Poinsettia. This is a keeper you don't want to sell or give this one away.

>Thanks, Bruce, I appreciate the comments. Unfortunately, this one is no longer in my possession, since I gave it to the guy who let me experiment with the wood. But, I do have another piece that I'll keep. It's a bit shallower, so it'll probably end up as a small plate or candy dish.
