My wife thinks I'm nuts

John

>Ok today is garbage/recycle day in the neighborhood. I had to stop at least 3 times on the way out to look at piles of logs that people are discarding. I saw some cedar and poplar. Anybody else got it this bad?

>OH YES

It is usually my wife that sees it and hollers STOP STOP.

Even though she does not turn she sees bowls in all trees. We are going to Alaska in May and I am just looking forward to her seenig the ice trees.

Good turning and be safe

Bill in Casa Grande, AZ.

>My wife, and a lot of other folks, think I'm nuts too. This is based on all of the old equipment, tractors and steam engines that "follow me home" on a regular basis. I have to prove my sanity though by getting things running or generating the end product as soon as I can though. Some people hunt deer, moose, and other critters. Others tree stumps and old tractor parts. It's all in the hunt.

You're fine.

Your wife must know my wife...

Not Me!

Ron in Drums PA

>My wife doesn't think I'm nuts, she knows for certain that I am. But she feeds into my obsessions. I few weeks ago she calls me on the cell phone "Hey Ron, someone is cutting a bunch of trees down, I don't know what they are but the name of the street is cherry blossom road. A few of them have this ugly gnarly growth on them".

If you remember a few weeks ago I posted a picture of a 20" cherry burl cap. Well, I picked up a total of 9 cherry burls in all because THE boss knows I'm nuts.

>My wife won't go for a walk on Wednesday night anymore. Wednesday is garbage day in our community and I once made her help me drag a plum tree home that was discarded in the tree lawn. She said, "never again!"

>I'm pretty new to turning and haven't yet found myself stopping at trash/recycle piles. I did find myself taking a different walking route through the neighborhood the other day and realized I was being drawn to the sound of a chain saw. Netted three nice hunks of bur (sp?) oak to practice on.

>My wife just rolls her eyes when I start talking about neighborhood trees. Funny thing is, the mailman came up the other day and told me about a pile of wood that a neighbor had to throw away. He said he thought it was cherry.

I'm going to have to teach him a little bit about tree identification though. When I got around the corner, I found out it was a bradford pear.

Funny you should mention that!

>We had a windstorm/snowstorm last weekend. Has been a bonanza around here, even for a total novice like me. Cherry, Cedar, Birch, unidentified, thorn apple. Conclusion: windstorm = windfall.

>My wife is a school bus driver.. most of her route is rural farm country... one of her student's father has an apple orchard... I told her that apple turns real nice... I now get all the trimmings and old trees for nothing.. saves him having to remove them... Plus she calls when she sees someone cutting trees...

I also get phone calls from her cousin who works for the county when they are taking down trees I might be interested in....

It is not a case of being nuts.. it is just a case of training your wife about what is important in life... LOL . of course the hard part is getting them to recognize what is good and what is garbage.. I think it is time to make up those flash cards and start having lessons after dinner... YEAH RIGHT.. I might get away with that.. LOL

>John,

I do it all the time. When we're driving in the car my son and I have this signal when we see tree cutters or after a storm see a tree on the ground. We look at each other and I make the "Red Alert" sound affect noise and we both say TREE DOWN! It's become a funny sort of habit.

Just the other day on the way to school I stopped and snagged a few pieces of interesting looking beech from some tree cutters. They're usually very happy to cut it to size if you ask. Just less that they'll have to haul away.

>After Isabel a couple of years ago I spent 2 weeks cleaning up after the storm. I was making 6-7 trips to the dump every day hauling pine. I always seemen to come home with logs on the trailer.

On one trip home I almost jack knifed the trailer when I saw a pile on ambrosia maple logs. I think I got 20 nice logs out of that pile.

>My wife has just gotten to the point where she just ignores me for the most part now. I am constanly bringing stuff home be it from the flea-markets, dumpsters or more road-kill wood. I guess she fiqures it's better than being a boozer or something, which in my opinion is the right attitude.

Basically, I'm always on "the hunt" but it's never for wine, women, or song.

>I have to Laugh. After posting about being in the STEP program I went to get the oil changed in my car. There were a bunch of hunks of apple firewood laying out back where I left the car. I had to ask. Not only was it OK to take the wood, they helped me load it.
