Critique needed - Sycamore Burl

Sam Dean

>All,

I would like to get your input on the photo and the bowl; don't hold back, I need to learn as much as possible. The bowl is sycamore burl, about 3" tall by 12" dia by 3/4" thick. Finish is mylands friction polish buffed with tripoli. The photo was shot with a 3 light setup and the backdrop is a piece of fabric from the local store. The color shown is correct for the piece.

Thanks for the help,

Sam

>Once again, really nice work. The only thing I would suggest is that the burned line is once again, in conflict with the figured wood. Perhaps the detail and separation that the groove provided would have been better done with a small bead or a groove that wasn't burned in to make it so prevalent? I think you choose a good spot for it, and I do like how it provides a delineation point for the rim and the exterior.

I'm sure I'm just crazy, and no one else will have an issue with it, but you asked for honesty. I applaud your request for honest critique.

>The wood is beautiful. I like the shape. I like the single accent line. Whether or not the accent line is needed is just a matter of personal taste. The wood and shape, perhaps, should just be allowed to speak for themselves. Nice work.

>Nice bowl. I like the line because it is in the middle of a flat area and makes a neat detail for the rim. Probably would go a little thinner, but that is just a personal preference.

>Hi Sam,

I'm no photographer so cannot comment on that part, but as for the bowl, I love it! I really like that rim treatment. It's simple yet really stands out. Very well done.

That sycamore burl wood is awesome looking. I've done some plain sycamore and liked it, but will have to keep on the lookout for sycamore burl.

Thanks for the post. I like this piece better than the maple one, but the rim treatment on the maple one is quite nice as well.

Great stuff,

Mike

Without having it my hands, which can make all the difference, my first thought might be itsa bit thick.

>Nice job Sam. But the burned line is to distracting. Burl wood has enough caricature to stand alone.

>Hi Sam,

I like the shape of this bowl however I think it would be better without the line, maybe even having the outward slope of the rim meet the curve from the bottom without flattening. I like the thickness, it displays more of the beautiful figure of the burl. My opinion of the thickness would be differant if it was natural edge.

>Hi Mike,

I had never even heard of sycamore burl, let alone seen any, until I found this piece. Talk about a lucky break, it was in a scrap pile at the local pallet mill. All in one piece, it was about 36" in diameter, around the entire trunk of the tree, and weighed a little over 300 pounds. They sell scrap for $5.00 a ton, so it cost me $1.06 (and nearly a hernia getting the thing in my truck). This is just the first of many pieces of that burl. The rest are on the drying rack ...... to be posted soon.....

Thanks,

Sam
