1st bowl...critques welcome

>This is the first bowl I've ever made...up until now the lathe was for making table legs..but with the new lathe, and the absence of shaking, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Started with Bill G's great video, bought a bowl gouge and chuck, and here is #1... finish is shellac and wax... critiques welcome, as I have a feeling I may be trying this again :)

My woodworking interests are all over the place, but my primary love is American Period furniture, especially Federal pieces... I also do some turning and am beginning to turn for the sake of turning and not just because I have to make a piece for another project. Same thing for woodcarving, a skill I'm working hard at developing. Like many, I'm a tool junkie, especially on the lookout for old quality user tools...I'm not a collector..I'm not a collector, I'm not a collector..oh..never mind, I might collect a little <IMG SRC="/webbbs/smileys/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Always on the lookout too for that special piece of wood that I might need someday... Very involved with the Guild of NH Woodworkers where I am a past president of the Guild, and just honored to be around so many talented people!! Can be found here or on the creek, especially if you look in the Neander sections.... Not a purist, but I do enjoy using hand tools, especially on the final stages of a project... Roger

Hello Everybody! I figure I've been hanging around WoodCentral for a few years now so I might as well officially post a Bio. I'm Jennifer and I reside in the heart of the Midwest in Indianapolis. You'll usually find me hanging out on the turning side of WoodCentral, but I check the Main forum too. I started woodworking about 25 years ago mostly interested in flatwork; small furniture and other items to use around the home. Then I discovered the lathe and became obsessed with it. I've been turning for about 23 years now. My love and excitement for turning has taken me into the world of teaching and frequent demonstrating. Lots of experimenting with textures, color, burning over the past several years. I've recently begun dabbling in metal clay work and have started incorporating it in to my turnings too. It's another toolbox full of toys! When I'm not turning, I'm hanging out with the love of my life and most honest critic, my husband Clay. In order to keep the lathe spinning and the lights on I spend the other part of my day at an ABC television station directing the evening newscasts.

As to the grain, pure dumb luck...I just cut a length off of some maple I have in the shop...can't wait to try turning some green wood next ...
