Woodcraft Slow Speed grinder - - initial review

Pete in Holland, MI

>Having taken delivery this past week of the on sale $74 slow speed 8" grinder with white wheels, here's my initial observations:

- Turned on and ran fine.

- Odd noise from right side of machine that haven't been able to narrow down.

- Both wheels wobbled some even though they were tight. Removed the inside washers and trued up the surface that contacted the arbor shoulder on my metal lathe. Helped considerably.

- Right side tool rests tips about 5 degrees to the right.

- Finish on wheel guards is excellent. Finish on motor & base appears like gray primer.

- Interesting that there is no trace of a manufacturer's name on the label. Only a serial number (makes it more difficult to chase down a manufacturer in a few years if you lost the manual ?)

- After wheel washers were fixed to prevent wheel wobble, wheel faces were dressed. Still has noticeable vibration from grinder, but doesn't wander around the bench from the vibration.

- Was disappointed in the internet sale that not only did I have to pay shipping, but also tax because of the store in Michigan.

Is it useable? Yes. The noise on the right side is the only thing that concerns me. Will keep an eye on the warrantee period. Plans are to mount the grinder to a surface, remove the tool rests, and purchase a Wolverine tool grinding system within the month.

More updates later.

>Pete, I have had mine for over a year, and it ran smooth and quiet right out of the box... I would have them send you a new one... they have good customer service...

When I purchase something new, I don't expect to have to fix it to make it work... other than dressing the wheels obviously...

>I've heard several people say they believe there is about a 50% chance of getting a dog when you buy one. Those who live close to the stores tell me they check 'em out before they buy them.

Mine was a dog. I called Woodcraft, and they replaced it with no problem at all. I was stunned at how good their customer service was.

>When I first fired mine up there was a whirring noise sort of like a card in bike spokes. I turned it off looked it over and re-started it. The noise was gone and I have not had a bit of trouble.

>Mine doesn't make noise or vibrate at all. The wheels vibrated when new but I've almost never had grinder that didn't need the wheels to be adjusted and trued. It's not a great grinder for sure but it was 1/3 of the price of the high quality grinder I looked at before I bought this one.

I dressed the wheels round and it is fine now.

>Pete,

This is one of them things that I do not agree with going cheap. The pros and cons have been beaten to death about grinders here on the forum. My heavy 8" Delta slow speed runs so quite I forget it is on offen. No vibration and good wheels. It falls into the catagory of you get what you pay for sometimes. Bench grinders are a life tool so buy the best you can get. Heck the one at our Guild is so loud the speaker has to wait till it wobbles to a stop to continue talking.

>Guys - - Yup, there were a few issues with the grinder. Is it useable? Absolutely. It goes back to you get what you pay for. I know what good equipment is as I use it often at work. I realized that this was not going to be a Baldor or other commercial grinder and because I opted not to spend that money, as the ginder will be only used for sharpening lathe tools, which turning is so far, only scheduled only to be a hobby. Some of us need to spread our money thinly thru our hobbies, and this was my choice. For my purposed, it will work fine. My intention was only to give a head's up to future buyers on what I found so that they will have more information when they go shopping.

I am looking forward to tools with proper grinds on them though (after the Wolverine stuff is ordered and arrives).

I have been putting off getting the balancing system myself and was wondering about getting the wheel dresser too. thanks for your time....

>I don't have any experience with the Oneway balancing system but did put together a Woodcraft Grinder/Wolverine system over a year ago. I dressed both wheels with the Wolverine diamond dressing jig and it seemed to be very smooth after that. I sold that unit to a club member but continue to use the Oneway dressing jig with my regular grinder whenever I feel any bumpiness on the wheels. Other than that, I use a T-shaped diamond dresser to clean up the wheels on a regular basis.

n2wood asked: I was wondering if you also have the wolverine wheel dresser? I have been putting off getting the balancing system myself and was wondering about getting the wheel dresser too.

>Am not aware of a Oneway dressing system, only a hand held diamond dresser of various shapes. Would suspect it is a fixture mounted diamond to ensure the wheel is trued by the diamond not dressing?

Trying to be careful of this black hole of turning finance that I a losing grip with the rim.

>Not sure Pete, but I seem to recall it being sort of similar to a balancing system that you would use on a car tire? If it's any consolation, my Woodcraft grinder (though good out of the box) got absolutely steady and quiet after about a week of use. In fact that grinder is one of the few tools in my shop that will pass the nickle test! I know it doesn't look like the grinder is on in the pic because the camera stops the action, but it is!

>My opinion is that the Oneway balancers are worth the price for the larger diameter, thicker, and machined FLAT wheel collars. That I can balance the wheel is just a bonus.

>For those who have the WC 8" grinder and have bought the Oneway Balancing Setup, which one did you purchase for this grinder?

My grinder, over the weekend, decided that it had legs of it's own and started walking up an down the bench in mid-grind. Thanks for saving me the time to pull things apart and try to figure out...Patrick
