Could this be a gloat?

Carole in VA

>Happened to see a maple tree going down today and asked if I could have some. They said help yourself, it's going to the dump. Looked at it and it appears to have some spalting. Now I just have to figure out what to do with it! This is my first wood "on the hoof" so to speak. Does it look like it will be ok for turning? There were some much bigger pieces but we couldn't handle them and didn't have a saw.

>Carole, it looks like perfect practice wood. Maple turns easily, sands well, and takes a finish nicely.

>Yes, you did good! Fresh green maple turns wonderfully. Spalting will be a bonus. Have fun and turn some stuff. I assume you know how to process those pieces.......correct? If not Bill Grumbine has a nice little tutorial on cutting blanks from logs. If not, hit the link below

But...but...but....

>that means I have to use that new Stihl! LOL Going to get Dick's brother over here to help me, I think. I have sealed the ends of the logs. Should they be covered until I can get to them? I am assuming that once the blanks are cut, I should seal them as well until I have time to turn them?

>I don't know Carol. You probably will get all kinds of bugs and disease from that stuff. Let me know where you live and I'll come take it off your hands before it does you any damage....:>))

>Cut the pith out of them and seal the remaining end grain. I wouldn't worry about covering them, they've lived this long. However, once you process and seal them, if they aren't stored indoors you should put something over them to keep the sun and rain off, nothing airtight, just a cover, if you don't rain will eventually wash off the anchorseal.

Have fun!!

>Practice wood? Calling wood "practice wood" sort of implies the results are gonna get tossed in the wood stove. I say consider it raw material for a gallery-quality piece.........until it proves otherwise! Looks like very nice wood to me!
