Keeping a Birch bowl light in color

Jerry in Indy

>I just turned a very light color Birch bowl that I would like to finish with oil so it could be used for food. What would anyone recommend and are there any oils that would keep the color as light as it is now?

>I bought some salad bowl finish at woodcraft - I think it's made by General Finishes. I don't know what it's made of but it does a nice job of not changing the color of the wood much, if at all. Definately much lighter than BLO or tung oil IMO.

>All of the finishes will darken it some. I use and like the General Finishes Salad bowl finish. I just got a set of 3" Beal Bowl buffs. The Salad Bowl Finish buffs out nicely. If you want to stick to oil the Mike Mahoney Walnut Oil is lighter in color than most I've seen. Woodcraft Supply carries it. It is a little different than the Walnut Oil you buy in the grocery store. It has been heat treated to help it harden and it still takes a week ot two to set up. The General finishes hardens overnight.
