The 10% wall thickness does not always work.
Tub cured as I normaly do but these went crazy.
Good turning and be safe

>Bill I have 2 Wysteria bowls that did the same thing. I'm going to handcarve them this summer. I hate to waste wood this pretty.

>Bill,
The 10% rule only works for woods that don't warp a lot. For species like Beech, Apple, Madrone, and evidentally Eucalyptus, this should be interpreted as desired final thickness PLUS 10%, or more. Thus a 10" bowl with a 1/2" final wall thickness might want to be 1.5" plus some extra for clean-up, sanding etc.
Since some species have shrinkage of over 12%, so we need to leave thicker walls for these. When I turn real movers like Beech, I usually turn them to final thickness (well, thin-ness) while green, wet sand to about 320, then hand sand when dry to remove all the fuzzies.
You should be able to power sand these Eucalyptus bowls off-lathe with a 2" or 3" rotary pad, but you'd have to rotate them pretty solwly to do this on the lathe.
