I screwed up

>I KNEW I shoulda listened.

But NOOOOOOO, I gotta try to save $100.

I looked at chucks yesterday and bought a Nova Midi.

Then I got it home.

Crud. The jaws don't align, yes they are matched 1-1, 2-2, etc.

The chuck itself runs flat smooth, no runout I can detect by feel either at speed or by hand.

The jaws, at least .040 out. They don't close right.

The grub screws to set tension don't thread into their holes in 2 out of 3 cases.

And the tommy bars are gonna be an obvious pain.

Back to Towson tomorrow.

But now I'm leaning to a Oneway given the fit of the jaws on the Nova product.

>Hi Bob.

I don't think thoes grub screws are ment to go in all three holes. Find the one hole that is threaded and ues it.

Have fun

>I am surprized that the quality is so poor. This is very atypical. I have a couple of comments:

1) Look at the Supernova 2; I think you will be infinitely more satisfied with that chuck over the Oneway or the Nova. I use the Nova for my cole jaws only. The Talon is good but I think the SuperNova 2 is better (and cheaper). I do like the Talon jaws but they fit fine on all of the Nova chucks.

2) I have a set of the 100 mm (4") jaws that were stamped incorrectly. Jaws 1 and 4 were switched. A few years ago, there was a flurry of messages from others about this problem which suggests that Technetool had a lapse in their quality control. I have heard no such complaints since then.

>Did you loosen the two screws holding each jaw, tighten the jaws, and then snug the screws down? In my usual fashion I didn't bother reading the instructions all the way through and missed that. After I took that step, the jaws on mine aligned just fine. I didn't even check to see if the grub screws would work. I did have to machine a spacer because the 1 x 8 screw on my cheap lathe is too long and the back shoulders of the chuck didn't bottom out.

>Robert,

I have five technatool chucks and a bunch of the jaws. Out of all those two sets of jaws were made incorrectly: the jaws didn't line up properly and would not close all the way. It appears they make the jaws by machining a circular part then cut it apart to make a set. If parts from two different sets get mixed up, they will likely not fit together properly.

In my case, I returned the jaws to Woodcraft and they replaced them without problem and the replacements were perfect. I also had one chuck that didn't operate smoothly and they replaced on the spot it as well. This kind of service is one reason I like to buy from a local dealer.

==================

The SN2 w/insert is actually *MORE* expensive than the Oneway Talon w/insert. $225 vs $210 at Woodcraft.

Maybe someone there can discover the problem with it?

I buy from KMS Tools

John Trant (Baltimore/WashDC)

>Hi Peter,

Actually I use KMS Tools as my standard for comparison shopping. At KMS, the SN2 is $185 (plus shipping)with 2" jaws, insert of your choice, and wormscrew.
