Domain Name Selection

>When registering for a domain name...the one I want is already taken....what would be the downfall of using .net instead of .com? Any that you can think of?

Thanks for any insight....

>Hi Jen,

Been there, done that.

My suggestion is to find another name altogether. Make it uniquely yours. Folks just don't pay that much attention and will assume .com. You will be spending bucks and time to promote your site. Don't make it too easy to confuse with someone else's. It just confuses and frustrates people.

Some day when I get back to the Midwest, I'd love to meet you. I travel some, doing home shows in my alter ego of the "Router Lady".

>Hi Jennifer,

I am not sure how much difference it makes. I do have a .com But I think it all comes down to keywords and links. But I did see that Inditurner.com was available. :)

Let me know what you decide, I will be first in line to give you a link.

>I was facing the same issue when I recently registered my domain name. I chose to stay with the .com but I added a hyphen in the middle. It worked in my case since it was two words. www.wright-turn.com

Maybe that is an option that would work for you.

I'm fortunate to have my webmaster (son) live in my house.

I look forwrd to seeing what you choose. I always enjoy seeing your work. Especially the new finishes that I'm too hesitant to try.

>Jennifer,

Carol is right in that the .com seems to come natural. It really depends on what your goal is though. If you want a business web site that you really promote and put a lot of time and effort into, you'll want to go with a .com. If your goal is a personal site to show off all your wonderful work and something to put on a business card as an aside, I wouldn't hesitate with a .net. A .org or any other dots just doesn't get the traffic unless you are an organization.

It really depends on whether you are looking at a web site as a front door or a side door to your turnings. You're friends and family will come to the side door, people that don't know you will come to the front.

>Carol is right, choose another name all together.

I also hope you're using godaddy.com, they're the cheapest. I can point you to a cheap host, too.

Do let us know when you do choose one.

>Your domain name should be unique and easilly remembered. And a .com is more easilly remembered than a .net.

How many missed visitors or messages are you willing to accept?? It isn't any different than having a telephone number that is similar to that of a business and having to answer wrong numbers. How many are you willing to put up with before you change?

Since the .com is more common than .net, you will find a lot of your visitors going to the other site. If you are also using the Site for e-mail, a lot of that will be sent to the other guy; and you will be depending on his good nature to forward it to you. How long do you think they will be willing to do that?? Right. You will be missing a lot of messages.

Someone suggested the hyphenated name. Same thing applies, people do not think in hyphens. Either way, there will be a lot of missed visitors, and a lot of mis-sent messages if you have e-mail.

Thanks Everybody

>My intention is mainly a place to show my work and point people to. My first intention was to find a .com that worked and also included my name. I've been over at registerfly.com where they cost $9.99/year. I'll come up with something, I'm sure...just curious about the .net thing.

Thanks for all of the great advice.

>I wonder if it isn't 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. I fully agree .com is what people tend to think of but on the other hand why would they know the name of the first part of your site. If you have it on your business card then the .net, org or whatever is there too. I think there is a chance in the future that the proliferation of names will cause.com not to be as dominant.

The real key to having people find you is getting the search engines to find you.

I would never use an underscore in a name since the underscore tends to vanish in underlined link name presentations.

Good luck,

Bill
