Gloat! brought a Jet mini home today!

Carol Reed, Strawberry, AZ

>Woohoo! Found one!

I have been on the lookout for a Jet mini lathe since I took a couple of classes from Wally a while back. It's not the VS but that's OK. Used but in good shape. Also came with a right angle tool rest.

The night before last I spotted one on e-Bay with a buy now price I could live with and it was located here in Arizona, so I could pick it up and save the shipping as well.

Turns out the thing had been on e-Bay for all of 10 minutes with 19 lookers already, when I found it.

Pulled the trigger real quick!

The slope just got steeper and slippery.

Now for the bowl gouge and scraper.

Excuse me. I'm off to Google a while.

>Nice one Carol....you're going to love that lathe. I still use mine a lot even though I have a bigger one. It's a great little lathe!

>Well good for you Carol. The flatwork will gather cobwebs now! Let me know if you need help.

Did you finish the article and get it to the publisher?

>I did, Wally. Sent off pictures of my three little bowls today. It should be in the next issue of Woodcraft.

When I get my tool shopping list together, I will run it by you. I have the notes for the article. Now I need to settle on brands and prices.

I looked at Crown tools today while I was in Mesa. How do they rate against Henry Taylors?

>Uh oh...now you've done it! LOL You've slipped into that spinning vortex which gets deeper and deeper! Congrats...I know you will like the Jet. Mine is not VS either, but it doesn't bother me 'cause I have never used VS and don't know what I am missing. I have both Crown and HT tools. Don't see a huge difference, but I think I am starting to like the Crown better. What kind of green wood does one find in AZ? Can you turn cacti? :)

>Carol, Crown tools rate right up there with H. Taylor and Sorby.

I want a copy of the magazine when it comes out.

One day Carol met Wally

David Sophusson, Custer Wa.

>at a small BBQ in the country and he showed her what a lathe was. Carol left Wally right.

Way To Go Carol

Jim Shaver, Oakville Ontario

>Hi Carol,

I have been turning on my Jet Mini now for close to 3 years...I LOVE IT!

:-)

I put mine on a Jet stand, it is a great setup!

I am happy to see you found a deal, soon you'll be showing us your fine work!

Take care,

Jim

Hey Jim...

>Have you weighted your Jet stand? If so, what did you use? I put an off-balance piece of cedar (6" x 6"diam) on mine the other day and she almost ran out of the shop! Don't really want to build a balast box cause I like to stand very close.

>Hi Carole,

I mostly spindle turn on my Jet, or small diameter turn , say less than 3" on the Jet. I run it at a slow speed and brace it with my foot at this point. If I have something bigger I go to my General and turn it rough to round there then over to the Jet if I need to, the sizes are both 1x8 for the two lathes.

I have not seen a set up for weighing down the Jet stand, but it could easily be done. The beauty of the stand the lathe is that it is transportable.

Hope that helps,

Take care,

Jim

>Wish I had a big lathe so I could do that! (Carole hears a case of the "wants" and "gotta haves" rumblimg over the horizon.) Guess I'll try draping some sandbags over the bar.

>Hi Carole,

The sand bag idea is simple and effective really, the steel in the base design is simple to work with if you chose to build a ballast box, it can be drilled for fasteners etc to facilitate the attachment. You could easily do that, but I have chosen not to.

Take care,

Jim

>You're gonna love your Mini. Don't worry about not getting the VS model. Personally, I think it's overkill on a lathe of that size. Practically speaking, for most items like boxes, pens, paperweights and the like, you could just pick an intermediate speed and never bother to change it. For rough, out-of-balance bowls that approach the size limits of your lathe, you will have to throttle down the lathe speed. Enjoy!
