A suprise I got

>Just got my Super Nova Chuck out of the box to turn a bowl and it was fine, much better than the past method's I had been using. Now the suprise, also got a set of cole jaws and was going to install them on the chuck, no problem but I had turned a I think now 7 5/8" bowl on the outside dia. and believe it or not no position of the rubber buttons mounted on the jaws would chuck the bowl. What a downer inside of the bowl was curved so that did not work well either although I did use in that manner to half A turn the bottom. Should went back to a board and tape or a jam chuck.

Ex[ierience is a costly teacher.

>Your super nova chuck has a safety set screw that keeps the jaws from extending past the housing. I remove the safety screw when using the cole jaws because I cannot hit my knuckles. It will give you the extra distance needed. Be sure to replace the saftety screw when you go back to the other jaws or you will turn your knuckles red.

>Thanks I will find that and remove for that use and then reinstall. I guess the company cannot tell users that.

>Er, Ah, That's true for the old style Supernova, but I'm not sure that feature applies to the new Supernova2. I have an older S-N, and there are 2 positions for the screw to allow the jaws to extend where appropriate, or only extend flush with the chuck body for "teaching" situations. I recently got a S-N2 for a local turning club, and did not notice this feature -- it's about 100 miles away right now ...

>May be but you would think that size deminisions that are usable would be advertised with the product although that would make a differance in sales I suppose. Got this chuck at a good price and from information site I thought the only differance in the old SN and the new SN2 was that the new chuck was enclosed to keep trash out. Have an air hose by the lathe and chips not a problem. evidentially there is other differances also. Another set of screw holes between whats there should cure the problem if they would just move over a little bit to drill them. Shure hate to start cobblin on a new thing.
