Another New Tool

Bill Grumbine, Kutztown PA

>Greetings all

Between teaching students and making hamburger out of sacred cows on the AAW forum, I haven't had much time to post here. Well last weekend during a class, my bandsaw motor went belly up. I decided this was a good opportunity to move up to the saw of my dreams, and which SWMBO had given me permission to buy some time ago, on the condition that we had the moolah. Well, I have the money, and the show is coming to town, so in another few weeks I will be the proud owner of a Mini Max MM 20.

If anyone here is interested in a used Jet closed stand saw that needs a motor, it is advertised over on the classified board.

>Bill,

Fantastic news about the MinMax 20"! Man, you are sooooo lucky!

BTW, which woodworking show are you speaking of?

See ya around,

Dominic

>I've also been looking at Bandsaws for some time and would like to know your reasons for the Mini Max 20. I've always been interested in maximizing the cutting height. Recently more companies have been coming out with 18 or 20" saws that also have a 18 or 20" height (Laguna) The last time I looked at Mini Max it was a 16" height. Any feedback would be appreciated.

You're welcome!

>Don't I get some kind of rebate for helping you get the Mini-Max? :-)

I'll be assembling my Grizzly this weekend. That block of cherry will be the test. I just hope it's not a unlucky block!

>I enjoyed with and agreed with all that you wrote over there. A few weeks ago I began a discussion in the AAW email group about that same article and said essentially the same thing that you did. That article really frosted my a$$. Good job!

Have fun with the new saw!

If so, I am even happier I bought the DVD.

>Howdy every one

Dominic, the show is a professional show (or at least one tailored to pros) in Ft. Washington April 14 and 15. I had to wait a whole year for the combo machine. This is only a few weeks!

Greg, a couple of companies have come out with outrageous resaw heights. I had been looking at the MM 20 for a while, and then considered the new MM 16, but they gave me a deal on the MM 20 which puts it right in my price range. It will resaw up to 15 3/4" or something like that. Anything longer (higher?) for the lathe will be handled with a chainsaw, and boards for flatwork that would be wider than that are so rare anymore that to plan for them is almost useless.

Charlie, I should have charged you extra. As it is, I will have to send the bill to Denise! Maybe a little blackmail is in order. ;-)

Mike, you will have to come up and see it, and maybe bring Jim along.

Bill, you are right, you have helped, and I cannot tell you how grateful I am for the support of folks like you.

I will be sure to post some pictures of the event when it comes home to live in the shop.

Bill

I opened my first issue of the AAW journal to be insulted and outraged by that article. I figured that was too high a price to pay for turning insurance, and if that was what AAW was promoting, I wanted no part of it. Thanks for pointing me to the AAW forum and the overwhelmingly reasoned voices of AAW members who provided thoughtful counterpoint to the "official party line." I spent the latter part of this evening reading, and contemplating, the whole thread.

BTW, I agree with everything you said, but have some serious problems with couple of the points made by a couple of others who also express their opinions here.

But, there is no sense starting this debate all over again again on WC, as it would not help much. Instead, I would suggest that all interested parties read the discussion in the AAW forum, and (if you have a cast iron stomach) read the AAW article on plagiarism. IMHO, this article mostly panders to the promoters, the advertisers, the Barnums, the critics, the "art experts" who front "art" galleries, some editors and other pontificators, the Baileys, and other weasels (who never shaped anything of beauty nor loved anything beautifully shaped from a unique tree by the hand, mind, and heart of a unique turner and created by the infinite Wisdom of the Creator), who care only for their advantage in the exchange of little green pieces of paper.

BTW, what makes someone a "senior member" vs. a "junior member" vs. just a "member" of the AAW community? I hope it doesn't have anything to do with some critic's judgment of artistic merit, or craftsmanship, or even "sweat equity" in turning trees into mulch.
