Chechen & Kingwood turned boxes

Dominic Greco in Richboro PA

>Hi Everyone,

Below are some pictures of (2) boxes I completed this past weekend. The first was turned from Chechen, and features a Zircote finial. The second was turned from Kingwood. Both were rough turned from wood with a 14% moisture content, alcohol soaked overnight, wrapped, and then allowed to sit for about a month. They were final turned using the method described in the book "Turning Boxes with Richard Raffan".

I never worked with either of these woods, and I blame Ellis for pointing me in the direction of West Penn Hardwoods. He saw me walking around the WoodWorks 2004 show in Fort Washington PA, decided my wallet looked too heavy, and brought me over to the West Penn Hardwood booth and introduced me to the guys there. It was pretty much down hill all from there. :>) I walked away from there a few bucks lighter, but in possession of some Zircote, Chechen, and Kingwood. All were woods I've never turned before (I have to say that I liked the Kingwood the best).

The Kingwood box measures about 3" tall x 2 1/2" in diameter. The Chechen/Zircote box measures 4 1/4" tall (top of finial) x 2 3/4" in diameter. Both were sanded to 400 grit and given several coats of PSI's lacquer sealer. Just as if they were pens, I allowed the sealer to harden for about 15 minutes and then sanded up to 12000 grit (micro mesh). A second coat of sealer was then applied and allowed to harden before polishing with white diamond buffing compound. I then applied and buffed out a coat of Renaissance wax.

Of the two, I favor the Kingwood box. I'm still on the fence about the finial of the Chechen box. This was a first attempt at adding a finial to a box and I think that it's too "fat" and tall. What are your opinions?

Thanks for viewing.

See ya around,

My ugly mug

Very nice

>As always, very nice Dom. Did you use Raffin's procedure for a vacuum type fit or a friction fit?

>Very nice. I especially love the detail on the finial of the checen piece.

Isn't kingwood something special! I think it is one the the prettiest exotics out there.

>Dominic; they are both very nice pieces! I agree that the finial and lid on the Chechen box don't flow as well as the Kingwood box. We are not talking about awful here by any means! I think the finial would work better if the lid were a little shorter and a little larger in diameter where the finial meets it. It might look nice if the Chechen lid had a bead on it where they joined. Please understand this is constructive criticism from an amateur, who is probably at about the same stage in turning as you are. These are just my thoughts on how I would make a fine piece more to my liking and I commented only because you asked. I just started working with Mexican Kingwood. It really is nice wood to turn.

Friction fit

>Thanks for the compliments. I used the friction fit for the Chechen box, and vacuum for the Kingwood.

>Nice to see some of your work Dominic! Its been a while if I recall correctly. Of the two I prefer the Chechen box, too. They're both very nice, as is all of your work. Your critique of the finial is right on the mark, it is a bit massive. Proper finial size has to be about the hardest darned thing to get a grip on - anyone who can nail it with reliability is truly a master - ain't me! I can think of just a few Jeff L. comes to mind, as does Wally and Anthony Harris, and of course Cindy Drozda. Thats some mighty fine company up there.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks to all of you for your compliments and for providing such great input!

On my next series of boxes, I will attempt to adjust the finial size to make it more "graceful" and less clunky. It's all a matter of practice.

See ya around,

Dominic

Looking good Buddy; some questions.

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Dominic,

I haven't had time to do much posting lately. I do look most everyday and answer questions on alcohol drying. Your post is the first I can remember referring to drying tropical wood with the alcohol drying protocol. Do you believe the alcohol had any adverse affect on the properties of the finished wood. The boxes look like they finished very well to me. I have been wet sanding cocobolo with alcohol to keep the sand paper from gumming up due to the oil in the wood. After the wood was soaked did it still gum up the sand paper? Drying tropical woods is one of the questions I am most often asked. My answer is I can't afford to buy it so I haven't collected any data.

I like both the boxes. The two woods in the finial do not tie together well. The shape and size of the bead on the finial disrupts the flow of the form. Just one man's opinion. Still two beautiful boxes.

Hi Dave

Dominic Greco in Richboro PA

>Dave,

Thanks for the compliments and the input my friend!

I didn't notice any changes to the properties of the wood. Then again, this is the first time I turned either one of them!

But now that you mention it I was noticing that the kingwood was gumming up the paper an awful lot. Since this was the first time I ever turned Kingwood, I just thought that this was normal for this wood.
