>Sure....make one! look in the articles section for Dominic's steady rest. You will have to adjust the scale to fit the mini. They work great!

>I must admit a fascinated curiosity about these things. Aside from when I turned a few fox hunting horns (think very thin, long spindle turning), I haven't ever had a need for a bowl steady. I've cranked out quite a few bowls, from little'ns up to 20"rs. Some of them even sell.
Where is it in the process that the bowl steady is needed most? Maybe I'm missing out on something good!
Bowl steady use

>They come in handy on thin wall pieces, especially green bowls.
Before I made one I just put my fingers outside the bowl to damp the chatter. Now I don`t burn my fingers or the web of my hand by reaching too far or pressing too hard, have better control of the tool(especially scapers)and don`t have that nagging worry(however unfounded)about my fingers getting injured.

>If you don't see the WoodCentral menu on the left of your screen, then you must be entering thru the backdoor. Try coming in via www.woodcentral.com and see everything WC has to offer - including the WC Articles.

Shouldn't be too difficult

>I always get worried when someone can't navigate the site easily. Assuming you are now looking at the red navigation bar to the left of the messageboard, you should see a link to "WC Articles & Reviews." Click that and you will go to the articles index page. From there, you can use any of several ways to find what you're looking for.
One is to type steady or steady rest into the search box and hit enter (or click the search button).
Another way is to do a CTRL-F and search the index page with your browser for steady or steady rest.
Another way is to click the "Turning Tools & Techniques" link and scroll through the list of turning-related articles.
If anyone else is having trouble navigating through our (admittedly huge) web of pages, please describe your difficulties via e-mail, and offer suggestions if you have any. I want this place to be easy to navigate.
It's too bad that some people still are using the back door (cgi-bin) route to the messageboards. The navigation bar to the left of the 'boards is the most complete on the whole site. You may be missing a lot.

>I made a steady rest from Dominic's plans and have found it very useful. Why do you need one? If you do bowls, you don't. But if you do a 10" or 12" tall and 4" or 5" wide hollow vessel you'll find it very valuable. When a vase is hanging out that far from the chuck, the steady rest really helps stabilize things.
