What to do with thin cut offs? *LINK*

Don Henthorn

>Like many woodworkers I hate to throw away the cut offs of perfectly good wood. I often took a cut off and cut it to the largest circle I could get from it and threw it in a box. I have several boxes of these averaging from 3/4" to 1 1/2" in thickness and 2 1/3" to 8" in diameter. I turn saucers of different shapes out of them, but I would like to do something else. Does anyone have ideas on what I could make from these that would be nice looking and useful? TIA

I turn handmirrors out of 5 1/2" stock and picket mirrors out of 3 1/2". I glue scraps together to turn segmented ornament balls and sometimes wine stoppers out of them.

When I do small hollow vessels I often turn a contrasting wood lip. Small scraps come in handy for that.

Heat

Mike Schwing from Md.

>We make heat from them at my house. In the fireplace they go! I fill up a 55 gallon trash can with cutoffs, large and small, and it'll feed the fire for an entire afternoon/evening.

>KNife handles, contrasting inserts to box tops, patchwork boxes, tops for the new kits that require disks like a mirror, pill box, money clip, book mark, etc.

Drill a 3/8" hole, insert a 3/8" dowel and turn a top.

It goes on and on. This is very bad for me as I have limited space and save everything.

>Man, I thought I had the pack rat gene. You guys got it bad. Last year I made about fifty ornaments. This year, with the off cuts from those , I'm making earrings.

Sometimes you just have to turn those SOBs into BTUs.

>Mike and John. I sold all my equipment but the lathe and a scroll saw. I don't have a vise. Making glue ups would be a lot of work. I had much fine lumber before the auction, now I am using scraps and don't have a stove to burn them in.9-;

>Hi Don,

I can't seem to throw out good wood either. Here is a pic of some small bowls that I make.

I think the biggest is about 4" in diameter. I found them to be good sellers and fun to make.

>Thanks to everyone for his suggestions. I have gotten some suggestions. As for selling them, I have never found a market for them even the nicest ones. I have put fire sale prices on them and people pick them up, fondle them and remark about how nice they feel and how good they look and then just put them back down. I am not much of a salesman.
