>What advice do you need. I built one from Lamp rod and used it for a while until I got a new lathe and changed everything around. It works great. The only downside is having to remove it if you want to turn someting between centers. You could get around that by buying on of the drive centers from Bestwood tools that goes in the jaws of your chuck.

2 suggestions: 1. Put a rubber "O" ring on the morse taper end; makes a much better seal. 2. stretch an "O" ring onto the threaded pipe before you thread the bearing fixture on the outboard end and don't over-tighten the fitting; same reason, better seal.
I routinely pulled 27" of Hg. doing it that way.

>I have one of the early ones before they went to a #2 taper on the headstock end. I Used to make a mdf board with a mortise cut in to use a chuck to expand into with a hole in the mdf to attach a rubber tube to slip over the headstock end of the lamp rod. I glued fake shamos to the mdf and drew lines on the shamos to help placement.
I now use a faceplate dedicated to the mdf and do not use the short piece of hose. I caulk the faceplate to the mdf and just use this for vacuum holding. Works better that the chuck method and is much cheaper if you have an extra faceplate.
