JKJ Tool Tray

John K Jordan

>This is slightly related to another thread, Lathe Tool Storage: Looking for ideas. Would some of you please post photo's of your lathe tool storage? Racks, cabinets, whatever. Ted

Here is something I'd hate to work without but I haven't seen anywhere else. I think one should come with every new lathe. (Sorry if everyone else here has one of these and I just dont know about it)

This is not for tool STORAGE, but for setting down tools and keeping them within easy reach while working. I use it just to keep the tools Im currently working with handy, plus a bit of sandpaper or two.

I've seen people lay the tools down on the lathe bed where they are balanced precariously and risk rolling to the floor. Ive also watched people waste a lot of time reaching to a rack to pull and return the same tools over and over, or turn around repeatedly to place and retrieve tools from a table or cart behind them.

This little tray fits into the slot that runs down the center of the lathe bed. It took about 15 minutes to make a piece of plywood for the tray, some hardwood strips screwed to the sides to keep tools from rolling off, and a block trimmed to fit loosely into the slot on the bed. I covered the surface of the plywood with a scrap of industrial carpet held into place with some double-sided tape. (I also fastened a piece of carpet on the top of the lathe head to aid in arm support on occasion or to make a handy spot to place little things, but thats another story!)

Since the block underneath is fairly deep it holds the tray securely but it is not too snug so the tray still slides back and forth and is easy to remove. I move it in front or behind the tailstock as appropriate.

I havent shown this to anyone yet, but I described it to David Marks this weekend and he said he might make one. (Of course, his will be made of olive wood with ebony accents, hand-cut dovetailed joints, with Persian rug on the top and a gold leaf finish on the sides.)

>Very nice, JKJ ! Thanks for the idea of the deep block. One less nut to tighten.

I am not good at dovetailing. I will have to be content with some birch plywood with walnut accents, a WalMart special rug and a little gold paint. Poor man's pocketbook.

Thanks for posting.

>I have done exactly that for my Oneway 2436. I was doing Bird House Ornaments at Christmas. I was always swapping stuff and made a tray to fit over the 17" extension which is outboard. A $600 tool rest but it works great when doing small stuff. I made a piece the width of the slot and a slat on the bottom to secure on the ways. Can also slide it on the right side beyond the tailstock.

>Mine is very similiar but I also added 4 1" neo magnets counter sunk in the bottom. Position magnets so they are on top of the ways and helps keep it from being tipped.

I consider it a necessity when doing production type work.

I keep mine to the right of the tailstock and slide it on and off the end of lathe, that is when I remove it. It stays there 99 percent of the time but my lathe ways are 60" long.

>I have a rolling cart beside the lathe so it isn't really a problem where to put the tools. BUT I do envy you discussing this with David Marks. I would love to take a furniture building class with him some day. He does some amazing things with his contemporary designs.

Another Variation

John McAtee

>John, here's another variation - one I've been using for a long time. I put a handle on it to make it easier to pick up when moving the tailstock around. Not shown is the foot that fits into the lathe bed gap.

WOW ! All kinds of improvements

Fred in NC

>I think I will try a tray with all the improvements in it:

1. Handle

2. Slots

3. Magnets

In addition, I think the block to fint between the ways will be eliminated. Instead, the front and back pieces will be extended a bit to fit outside the lathe bed. That way the tray can be placed anywhere without tilting. The tools will stay in place if I take the tray off the lathe.

>John,

Is the foot designed so you have to twist the handle to fit the foot between to ways so it won't tip?

If that the Hair Club for Lathes?

One thing to watch for is not to make it too big. If mine were any wider, it would have gotten in the way of positioning the tool rest in some cases.

I don't understand the need for magnets, since the block (foot) prevents any tipping. Try cutting a block to just slide easily into the slot, hold it in place and try to twist it. The geometry prevents any motion that could cause the tray to tilt.

A handle might be nice, but I think it would just get in my way. I don't have any trouble picking up the tray by the ends and moving it. However, I don't carry it far with tools on it.

>No, Clem, the foot runs the whole length of the tray and fits snugly between the ways. It will slide but you can't tip it.
